Wall art suggestions

last month

Hi there, we moved into our new home about six months ago and I’ve been gradually designing each space. Most of the flooring is grey ceramic tile and the walls are white, so the rooms can feel a bit cold. My goal has been to bring in warmth and color, and I think I’ve made good progress so far
I chose a coral and rust Persian rug with touches of blue and green, but I’m now struggling to find artwork that ties everything together. I really like a calligraphy piece I found—the original is in blue, which I love. However, I considered customizing it into mahogany tones for more depth and richness.

After seeing the mahogany samples, I’m unsure—they may clash with the rug. I’m now leaning back toward the original blue version, but I’m confused about what color direction will work best overall. I don’t want the artwork to feel too rust or coral-heavy, but I also want it to feel warm and cohesive.

I’d really appreciate your advice on the best direction or any alternative suggestions.

if you love it, it works.

Art shouldn't match anything, it's a reflection of you and your interests.

I would swap the two white chairs and the burgundy chair for a more open feel rather than separating the dining from the living space.

Art is bought because you love it as it is. The blue ottoman makes no sense to me and too many pillows on the sofa , love the rug . You need lighting and the best for that would be larger end tables to hold lamps for sure

@Alex John, I got the rug from rugsource.com. They’re vintage rugs, you might not get the exact one (vegetables sarouk Persian rug) but they do have a wide variety in similar patterns and colors.

@Patricia Colwell, thanks for the suggestions, I agree, the blue ottoman does feel rather random. The lamps are in my pipeline, definitely going for oversized ones. Any suggestions for chandeliers ? was thinking of Moroccan brass lamps

IMO you have to search too hard in your rug to even see any blue/green elements for them to have any influence on your room. The blue pouf doesn't work in the room.

I don't understand the installation of tile on the one wall in the room unless this room is located in Morocco.

I'd stick with selecting art that reinforces the coral tone you have decided for the room.

Your art needs a light that places the bulbs out in front of the art, not on top of the art.

Your rug is a superb base for your living room.
    All advisors have valid points.
Art is art...leave it to shine on its own.
Lose some of the sofa pillows.
    Change color of ottoman.
Put more substantial tables on either side of the sofa, try nice sturdy lamps there to bring that tableau forward from the curtains.
Put a narrow table between the two white chairs.
You have started assembling a comfortable pleasant area, using heavier sofa side tables will add substance and eye appeal ,and ground the area.
    Do show us your updates.

My only issue with the tile is that, at least on my monitor, it appears to be a cool grey, while the upholstery of the sofa and two chairs look like a warm grey.

If the influence is Moroccan, so what? The grille on the console table, and the non-representational, calligraphy-influenced art, display similar influence.

Whether or not someone named Azmat Shah has Moroccan heritage (which is none of my business), I don't like to see people or their homes put in boxes. Follow "unless this is room is located in Morocco" to its natural conclusion, and nobody outside of Iran could enjoy Persian rugs in their homes, and if we wanted Tudor architecture, we'd have to go back in time to live in the 15th–early 17th centuries. Thank goodness I myself am vintage mid-century modern, or I'd have to give up all my furniture!

Both versions of the art are beautiful, Azmat, though on its own I prefer the blue version. I can see the blue in your rug, but your current blue pouf doesn't seem to fit in comfortably with the rest of your décor.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images...You nailed it! Those visualizations really came together!

Actually, the tiled wall installation and paneling was something i inherited from the previous owners and I personally don’t like it as much but decided to embrace it for now. Yes, the grey tile is more of a cool grey and the couch is more of a warm grey, the two chairs are actually an ivory white/slight beige color in boucle. I’m absolutely loving all the suggestions and visual renderings. It’s taking off a lot of the confusion and internal conflict I was having with the artwork.

Celery, the renderings are great, it’s given me so much clarity in my mind. I never thought of the oriental rug wall artwork in blue but I might incorporate it.

The tile you "inherited", I just don't see it in the scheme. I'd hang art over each area of tile.

Do you have to have curtains?

I'd cover the vertical black tile with something tall that relates to the height of the windows. This is another rug (a runner), but a length of great fabric or a long tapestry would work too.

I like your blue calligraphy piece very much. Could it go on the side wall on the right in this photo? (Can't see enough to know whether there's space there.) I added floor lamps too, since I don't see any other lighting if the wall fixture over the sofa goes away.
