Looking for a living room rug. Having hard time coordinating with fireplace tiles which are navy blue and the furniture

Your fireplace tiles tend to look more black on my screen. It would be better to coordinate with you furnishings which trend brown

Agree with bolder ( & darker).

That's an attractive rug you posted, Lyn. But buyer beware! Rugs dot com calls it a Bokhara. It isn't even remotely a Bokhara rug—it's polypropolene! That aside, if it lives up to the description and the ratings, and suits the homeowner, it looks to me like a good buy.

I think coordinating the rug with your furniture, versus with the fireplace tile, may possibly give you a better look. It’s fine that you have some of the blues, in your pillows, etc. But I really think the room would be more anchored and look more chic if you don’t ”over blue-it.” :)

I asked AI to give me some rugs that tie together the colors in the space. I love AI, btw. AI rarely argues with me and mostly complies with my requests. So I let AI come up with the colors, and AI apparently ‘went for the blue’, too.

Which, would seem logical. Though, a tad redundant, me thinks. I think AI also based some of the color choice on your blue art and blue accessories.

So, in any case, I think I would basically ignore the blue tile on the fireplace. I would not let it run my life. I would sync the rug up with the furniture, instead. The blue in art can of course stay. Also, the blue accessories can stay, if you like. But I would claim my independence from the blue fireplace tiles. They’ll be ok. :)

I prefer natural fiber rugs such as wool, silk, cotton, or? I’m sure they’re pricier but they look & feel better imo. There are many online sources to browse through …. My favorite rugs are the ones from Room & Board, Rejuvenation …. I have several from both & haven’t regretted my purchases.

Think of the room as a whole and if wanting to highlight/work with the navy tiles…head in that direction. As your room feels eclectic and warm, thought you might like these ideas.

After you add the rug, be sure to enhance with cushions and how you accessorize the fireplace.

pretty room! i like wool rugs from Annie Selke - she has a fun one called Paint Chip that comes in lots of colorways if you’d want to go bold

There are many ways you can go. As I mentioned upthread, I would lean into the furniture colors. Could really be any warm color rug/combination.

These rugs would work in the space.

On Etsy: All of these combine blue and brown beautifully.

Your hardwood floors are so pretty! Just a suggestion, I would not cover it at all. I have hardwood floors and guests never complained, too busy admiring the floor and fireplace.

I would agree with matching the fireplace

I think the rug you have now is ok. What I think needs changing, is the artwork above the fireplace. Maybe you could find a larger picture that has navy and browns in it. I don’t like the red. It doesn’t tie in with anything else. Plus, replace all the little things on the fireplace with something bigger on each end instead of so many little things that make it look cluttered.

Art doesn't have to tie in with anything else. It's art, not décor. I blame HGTV and Trading Spaces for this nonsense. That doesn't mean your art can't tie in with your décor, of course. But it definitely does not have to.

thank you for all the comments. The artwork was done by my daughter when she was 8. She is now 40. It was of our dog at the time. The glass objects on mantel other than red piece, were blown by my son. still thinking of replacing rug. my husband wants something light in color and not busy.

I really like the art above the fireplace, and now that you mentioned the backstory, I like it even more! Your room is lovely. My suggestion is to see if there is a rug store close by that will allow you to take some rugs home, and try them in your space. Pick some rugs outside your comfort level. You, and your husband, might be surprised by what you like.

Like the suggestion to repeat the red of the art in the rug. Here are two of many options:

I also moved the glass pieces to the niche above the art, to give the niche purpose and to better highlight the pieces.

    Love the red!

Much better. It ties in the colors and creates a more cohesive look. The bigger rug is a better size and I like the colors and pattern better.
