Is this too busy?

last month

I uploaded a pic to try out the tile I'm considering and these are the results. I wanted something less sterile than subway tile but wonder if this is too busy with the countertop. What do you think? Thank you.

In the top pic your countertop looks grey and the backsplash is not a good match for grey. In the bottom pic your countertop looks different and it is a fine match.

Is the tile wavy or textured or is that just the AI image of it? I would not want to clean a wavy or textured tile on a splash.

Order samples of whatever tiles you are considering and hold them up on the wall using Alcolin Quake Putty.

Visit local independent tile stores that have grouted sample boards that they will let you borrow for a few days. The grouted sample boards are the best way to see if a tile color and/or pattern will work with your counters. AI isn't your answer.

FYI, this forum is quite afraid of color and/or pattern, so many of the answers will tend to favor plain tiles.

I used a patterned tile mosaic for my backsplash, but I have a large kitchen with high ceilings and it needed more than a plain subway tile.

Yes, the pattern is too busy.

Yes, this forum is terrified of color.

I'd go with a color, maybe blue if that is the direction the counter leans.

Kendrah, the countertop is looking grey and does lean that way from a distance, but it has the same cream as that tile and brown of the cabinets. I wondered about cleaning it, but it is more rounded that indented, if that makes sense.

Chispa, I have the board from my independent store but is a huge board and will not fit under the cabinets, unfortunately. I considered color, there is a lovely blue tile in subway, but I'm not crazy about picking a color that is not in the countertop, tho it does go well with both countertop and cabinets. Your tile is pretty. What is it?

Mad_gallica, do you mean blue subway? Or just blue, in general?

Blue in general, but something relatively plain.

Would a 4x4 square tile, diamond pattern, be a good option?

A 4x4 square, offset or stacked, in a pretty color would be my choice. There are some really nice saturated colors on that board--green would work well with your cabinets. Or orange, red or yellow.

And yes, people here are color-phobic and pattern-phobic.

The tile seems to vibrate. I don't understand the fear of color. It seems like so much angst trying to match various whites. Green or blue could be gorgeous. And fairly nuetral. What color do you love?

john3582, I have a lot of blue and a fair amount of green in the house. The color I absolutely love is mustard - it is my go-to accent color, love its warmth and ability to tie warm and cool colors. My biggest hesitation in using color there (especially blue or green) is that it isn't in the countertop at all, and would just look like a solid color slapped on the walls. Does that make any sense at all?

Artcrafted - Fern is a pretty green that seems to work with all individual elements. There is also a cotton in that line that seems to be the exact cream match for countertop (and my wood trim). Would it look stark to have a dark-ish green backsplash? The cotton is a safe bet for sure, but the green is really pretty and is a green I frequently use in the house.

I like the fern green tile, its a great choice match for wood and white and is a popular color combo in kitchen remodels.
