Yes, undertones matter. Yes, ceiling and walls same color, they will look different with shadows as would trims in the same color different sheen would.

BM Chantilly Lace is a fairly neutral white, no undertones.

I prefer matte for walls, with flat for ceiling and semi-gloss for trim.

White paint is seldom white and even when it is a nice neutral white, it will reflect the other colors in the home. My sister had really neutral white walls, then put in wall to wall green carpet and her white became green.

BM Chantilly Lace is pretty light and neutral, with just a touch of warmth.

SW High Reflective White is slightly more neutral, is also lighter.

Both can feel stark if the surrounding colors are warm or dark.

If you are planning on painting the walls, ceiling and trim the same color a bit of warmth (yellow) helps keep it from being too stark.

What are the other finishes in your home? Cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring, furnishings? What is the style?

The other thing to consider is your lighting. To get a true white you may need to get daylight bulbs with a kelvin of 4000 to 5000.

We recently needed a neutral white for a bathroom. After testing several, SW Pure White was the best fit. However, I believe it’s considered a warm white but doesn’t have a hint of yellow, at least in our space. Very neutral and not stark.

Chantilly Lace and High Reflective White would be too blinding for me to live with, but everyone is different - that's why there are so many paint colors. I would always go with SW Pure White for a versatile but not in your face white. You need to look at samples next to your furnishings and fixed elements such as kitchen cabinets and tile in order to determine which white is best for you.

Yes to painting walls, ceiling, trim all the same color. I'd do matte walls, flat ceiling, eggshell trim.

Chantilly Laces as others have said. It also it the most complained about color to paint by contrators. It can take a ton of coats because there is are no undertones, just a very near to sheer white.

you can buy the Base 1 can of paint and have the paint guy just add the white tint to it. This way it's as close to white w/no undertones that you're going to get.

Almost all of the other white 'colors' add yellow, or black, or red, green, along w/the white when they tint. adding just the white will give you white.

I like Chantilly alot but may be a bit bright. We get alot of natural light in the house and all our bulbs are daylight. Do not want a grey or yellow undertone. Appreciate the education. I will go to SW tomorrow and get a base and add white. Plus trial size Chantilly and Pure White. Paint on the walls and see what happens. Interesting.

If you refer to this website that lists SW Whites, as you click on each color the description will tell you if the color is NEUTRAL or has a color UNDERTONE. This might be helpful.

Our main living spaces, stairwell, and bedroom hallway walls and ceilings are all painted in BM Super White in Aura paint matte finish (base molding is satin finish).

Never ever would I paint wall matte walls. That's what the builder leaves so you can paint over with your color choice. Matte will show every scuff, every touch and you will have to paint over vs wipe them away. Even matte ceilings attract/hold dust and spider webs more than egg shell or semi gloss. Function people function.

Production builders use cheap flat paint that looks like primer on walls.

I guess you haven't used Benjamin Moore Aura matte paints?

They clean up easily and also touch up well if you have leftover paint. I have been using BM Aura for 20 years with kids and dogs. Painted the walls in my last 3 houses with Aura matte in every room.

You have to be careful with the Low E glass in newer homes. Some companies glass is very green/yellow and it can really throw off paint color tremendously.

I used BM Chantilly Lace for all my cabinets, doors, trim, crown and ceilings. It was the only white that didn't turn dingy in my north facing FL kitchen, so it became the cabinet color and for continuity got used in the other areas.

My walls are BM White Dove, which do have a yellow tone to them depending on the room and time of day.

Chantilly Lace has a higher LRV than Pure White.

True white - not available in any paint color - would have an LRV of 100 and no undertones - perfectly balanced color from all wavelengths.

To reduce the LRV - not so bright - something must be added to the white, lowering the LRV.

If we reduce all the color wavelengths evenly we get gray - keep reducing and we get black.

If we recude the colors unevenly we get a muted color or pastel. (Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet).

You cannot darken true white without either gray or color becoming more pronounced.

Pick the white that goes best with everything else in your home. Try to look at the white next to the colors in your home, not comparing them to other whites.

Sure Pure White looks gray in comparison to Chantilly Lace, but you won't have Chantilly Lace on one wall and Pure White next to it. Does Pure White work nicely with your countertop and cabinets and flooring.

Kelly Moore Swiss Coffee 23. KM is no longer in business but their paint formula can be color matched at the paint store. A go-to white for years. We have it on our walls and love it. I still have the paint chip.

I am liking SW Pure White in my Florida home. I used it in 3 bedrooms as well as the trim throughout the house.

No undertones that I can see, just a soft white.

Look for a white with a high LRV number. For instance, I use B.M. Chantilly Lace when a "clean" white is needed. It has AI OverviewBenjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (OC-65) has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 90.4 on a scale of 0 (black) to 100 (white). In this case the 9.6 in a blue/gray, but out of 100, it isn't even noticeable.

Behr Ultra True white has 94 LRV. So even "whiter" than Chantilly Lace.

The OP does not want too bright and over 90 LRV veers into that territory. OP mentioned Chantilly Lace as too bright.

Good idea to paint the ceiling and walls and trim the same color. We did with Alabaster and it looks fantastic...opens up the space.

B.M. Super White or B.M. Oxford white would be the whites with lower LRV than Chantilly.

Yes, to flat on ceiling, yes to eggshell on the wall, but I would rethink the finish for the wood work because you still are getting a bright white...so a satin finish would be my suggestion....not so quite in your face. I have Super White semi-gloss on my trim and I wish I had gone with satin.
