It would help to see your furnishings or at least images if what you want. the mantle is odd. if you are keeping the tile, id place a simple mantle directly on top of the tile and have it go across the whole width of the tile. example below

A different mantel could improve the look. The existing one is floating in the air above the fireplace. Get a new, plain slab mantel the same size as the fireplace surround and butt it against the surround.

This sample is rustic but you could get a finished, painted one instead.

I fear the mantel would be too low if i move it down to the tile…. Would you paint the tile? I dont love the black grout.

Too low? Of course not. You could set a decor piece or two on it and hang some art at eye level above that.

You just moved in. Live with it until you have the budget to change the tile and add a fireplace surround. Don't waste time/money on temporary fixes that you don't really like.

For a classic coastal look, I’d keep it light and simple. The tile feels a bit busy, so you could either paint it a soft white or replace it with something cleaner - even larger white tiles or a simple surround. The mantel could also be updated - a slightly thicker, more substantial wood mantel in a light tone would warm things up nicely.

Once you paint the walls White Dove or Simply White, the whole area will already feel fresher. Then just keep the styling minimal - a few pieces, not too much.

The finishing touch would be a good fireplace grate heat exchanger to really make your home cozy in the winter.
