I'm Learning to Knit

A year or two ago, my best friend and I decided we were finally going to learn to knit. And we are learning, but whew -so many frustrations along the way. Still.... it's good for our brains, and we are improving, so we are sticking with it.


So I had to share this lttle baby set I finished recently. Made with merino wool I purchased in Buenos Aires. The wool came from local Argentinian sheep. It's by far the nicest yarn I've ever worked with.

    Learning?!? I learned to knit when I was 10 and still haven’t moved beyond simple scarves. That’s impressive!

      Oh my gosh, how long did it take? They look terrific. My SIL has been knitting for as long as I've known her (40 years?) and she still makes mistakes and grumbles while she is knitting : )

      My one grandmother could knit and crochet and taught me (or tried to!) when I was a young kid, but like Sueb, I never progressed beyond the simple scarf!

      To all the people saying they are still doing "simple scarves" -I feel your pain. It's so helpful to have a bestie to commiserate with. We both feel like idiots most of the time but we are so committed to doing things beyond scarves that we are gritting our teeth and pushing through! Oh, and in answer to the question asked, we started with YouTube and have done a few in-person classes but they are not located conveniently so that's been an issue.

      I did crochet in HS but never knitted.

      That is such a beautiful! set! I took group knitting lessons with friends at a local shop several years ago.. We made hats and mittens but I never finished the hat or started the mittens! I'm upset with myself for not staying with it and am so determined now to start again. It's all because of you, Bestyears!

      What beautiful work. The sweater and hat is so classic, it will be passed down. I never learned to knit, but did a bit of crocheting. Never went past afghans. One year I think I made 5, all different patterns. Taught myself through YouTube

      You re not learning. You have learned! Now it's just a matter of picking up different techniques. Knitting, like cooking or gardening, or painting or whatever, is an ongoing process. You have learned the basics--after all there are only two stitches--everything else is a variation on them.

      I learned to knit when I worked in an office in England and during down times we taught each other to knit. I made all kinds of stuff but that ended in the 70s and I have basically forgotten everything, including how to cast on. I would relearn just so I could make myself cardigans.
