What colors would you use to update this deck?

Looking for a short-term solution to make our little back deck inviting (while we plan the replacement). Just need help with color combo for tiles & paint for rails.

I’m planning to use some easy deck tiles - and repaint the railing. We don’t like the bright white because it really distracts from the lovely
View of the property below, with fruit trees and other mature trees.

Interior floors are warm/white oak.
Exterior is dark grey with white trim.

Would walnut tiles look good with a dark brown or black rail?

The deck is 8x12. Here are some of the tiles for an idea. I tend to like the softer/round edges but maybe that’s not going to look good?

If replacing the deck is the plan why not some pretty outdoor rugs instead ? They cost little can be used on the new deck and are a great way to add color . Big pots filled with plants placed to hide peeling paint and as for the railing honestly leave it until the new deck and then go glass and metal railing.

Why didn’t I think of that!!! Sometimes it’s the most simple solution. And a rug would definitely make it more inviting.

Now to narrow it down, what color/style for a modern/cozy feel…….i also want one that lays flat and doesn’t curl. Any suggestions?

I have used outdoor rugs for years with no curling issues. The sun takes care of that. Unfortunately the sun also fades rugs so keep that in mind when you choose colors. If you get a solid-color dull tan or gray it’s less a problem, obviously.

The only real issue I’ve had is the rug on my Trex deck with a semi-shady pergola above. My Trex was laid tightly with no drainage, so when we get several days of rain I get some mildew. I have to scrub it with vinegar to remove.

We use outdoor rugs, none has ever curled & I’ve found that they dry quickly after getting wet. We have 3 of these, many others & sizes online.

Consider faux turf. We have it around our pool and it has been one of our best investments. You can get it at Home Depot, which I would do for more of a budget consideration while you wait to install a new deck. The product drains and it is antimicrobial. Fescue at HD is fairly priced and there are different colors. If you do go faux, lay it so the blades go in the direction of the view...in your case, your backyard. You will know what I mean about the blades when you see the product. Comes off the bolt; comes pre cut; comes in individual tiles.

For railings, consider tempered glass with posts the color of your house.

I've had this kind of railing in my home. Safe and to code.

if you are pondering replacement, just paint the rails and spindles black and get an outdoor area rug to fill the space. Dream about what you really want for the space. Consider much larger if you have room to expand and the budget to make it great.

We are going to expand and update, lots of work ahead. In the meantime, I am liking the idea of a dark railing with a rug.

I could just leave it white but I’m in the mood for a little project where I don’t have to bother my husband, lol. A new fresh coat will also look super clean.

More projects Steph? You're certainly keeping busy. I had my eye on this rug for a long time. Many websites have it available if you want to shop for price. It comes in a really pretty black/beige or black/white plus may other colors.

Black and white would look pretty with black railings. https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/langley-street-tribal-indooroutdoor-area-rug-w000013795.html?piid=1327289741%2C1250382027

I’m loving the idea of some turf as well, and the microbial benefits. The back deck gets a lot of pollen, but not too much sun.

Now I just need to get the perfect t paint color for the rails - the darker the better, as I don’t want to highlight all the rails, I want them to disappear.

    Any favorites out there?

hi @katinparadise .... I notice that one project leads to another, I cannot tell you how helpful HOUZZ has been. Since posting on here I've made progress in each area - and before I know it the whole property and house will be pulled together.

I have some more updates in the Laundry/Office, but the nice weather has been distracting me, so it's nice to switch to some outdoor projects to get in the sun.

I'm going to check out that rug, I love the simplicity with the texture for interest.

My suggestion below is to have railings the same color as the house.

Where is this deck? What climate? A rug and or tiles on top of worn paint and exposed wood will trap moisture and begin rot, to say nothing of the creepy crawlers that will take up residence between the boards and rug. No covering the boards is not a plan if you want to keep the integrity/safety of the deck. There are opaque stains that don't peel. A wood deck is MAINTENANCE that's all there is to it. Sounds like you are planning more of a TREX installation. Save our pennies for that!!

Would make sure the deck structure can support tiles. If they are lightweight and have some flex those shouldn't be a problem. Rigid tiles won't take long to begin cracking. A rug sounds like an ideal solution. as far as railing paint will suggest that you use the same color as the trim on your house. Good luck!

Jumping on the rug suggestion for your deck. It will be a simple way to add color to the space and easily swapped out as you see fit.

I have the almost plastic type rugs and they have stood up really well and I just lift and shake every once in a while

Paint the posts to match the house and buy outdoor rugs as suggested. Be aware the colors will fade! I have a covered front porch and my initial set of rugs are now completely pale - all the color is lost. Since you will be redoing the deck, I would try the black and white idea - it’ll look good for a while at least.
