Rebounder (mini trampoline)

last month
last modified: last month

I recently learned these are called rebounders. :)

Mine came yesterday and of course I got right on it and acted the fool. I’d watched some videos and lessons, but forgot I’m not 25 and have no experience on these. My mind immediately went to ”A trampoline! Like the kind I had as a kid!”

It’s not. And my 56 yr old left knee is very disgusted with me today. But it’s still pretty fun, and sure got my heart going.

Just wondering if any of you have one and what sorts of workouts you do? Do you prefer shoes or barefoot? Any tips would be appreciated.

This is the one I got (and stupidly tried to jump like her):

Need a video or it didn't happen. LOL

Ok, ok. If every person on every Houzz forum sends me a crisp twenty dollar bill, I’ll post a video.

The money will go towards any future visits to the knee doctor.

    😁

    Yeah....that looks dangerous....

3katz, some models don’t have the bar! I’d never trust myself without it.

I‘m going to start over with it, very slow. I found a rebounder site that advised starting with just 5-10 minutes at a time, barely lifting your heels off it. Then go on to try longer times and more stenuous moves.

I learned something else: a sports bra is absolutely necessary with this thing. 😏

Be sure to talk your MD if you have any kind of plaque in your arteries. The increased heart rate with the jumping could cause any loose plaque to travel thru your system potentially causing a heart attack or stroke.

I would not be able to contain myself with something that seems like so much fun. I'd go nuts and be in pain for weeks afterwards.

RNmom, thank you, I wasn’t aware of that. Great info, I really appreciate it!

Kendrah, that was me last night. :D

When attending my 5 yr old grandson's birthday party that was held at a trampoline park, I sat on the sidelines as long as I could. I got out on the floor and had the most fun bouncing around. (Although, my participation wasn't anywhere near as rambunctious as most of the much younger participants.)

However, I quickly discovered that my bladder didn't enjoy it as much as I did.

I strongly suggest wearing extra protection.... if you get my drift.

More good info, thank you, pudgeder! :D

I miss my DD’s backyard trampoline. She and her dad (and I) had so much fun on that thing.

Sidenote: one rainy day, I looked out back and saw a family of wild rabbits using it as a giant umbrella. It was so cute.

I'm excited to follow along as you gain experience. I was thinking about getting a smaller one last year, but I never followed through. It seems like a good way to strengthen one's core without floor exercises. Please keep posting your thoughts and BE CAREFUL!

I bought one recently, too! I think that exact model, but I have been using it without the bar. I always use it barefoot, because I feel like it might be better for my feet. (I have no science to back that up.) I saw a Youtube video - sorry, can't remember which one! - that indicates even gentle, basic bouncing is really good for you so I've been doing a lot of that so far. There are all kinds of useful videos out there, but there is one Youtube channel I find fascinating yet difficult to watch at times. It features women twins who were apparently once overweight and got very fit using rebounders and now have a subscription service so we, too, can get fit. I don't really enjoy bouncing THAT much but it does help to shake up the regular routine a bit!

    Fun and Bluebell, thank you!

Fun, please let me know if you get one … we can all share our experiences. :)

Bluebell, I think I’m preferring barefoot, too. I agree, it adds some fun to the workout routine! I watch TV while bouncing. :D

I've had one for about 15 years or so. I go through phases using it. I don't follow any routine, I just put on fun dancing music and start jumping around. Sometimes I run in place, do jumping jacks, jump forward and back, one leg out and back, etc. Just whatever feels right. I've never tried to follow a routine, but I bet that would be a lot of fun.

I don't wear shoes, but if I'm jumping often or for a long time, the soles of my feet will get sore, so I have a pair of those non slip socks like you wear in the hospital that I will wear.

It is a good cardio workout. I'm suprised sometimes how how my heart rate gets when I don't feel like I'm doing much. I don't find it hurts my joints, but my lower core is pretty sore when I first start back into it after a long break.

Lisa, they might have been jumping before it started raining. :D

Legomom, thank you for those great ideas! I was surprised at my heart rate, too … I walk and do daily exercises, and didn’t think jumping around would be much work.

What’s the longest you’ve jumped? Or do you break it up? I can’t do very long yet, so am doing morning and evening for now.

  • last month

Lately I have only been doing it in short sessions - like 10-15 minutes. I used to use it as my main cardio and I would do a whole hour. I think my attention span must have been better then :) I will also kind of run in place on it while I'm watching TV to get my step count in. During Covid I would take it to my outside patio on oretty days and jump there with my earphones in.

    Jilly thanked legomom23

I like all of those ideas, thank you!

I walk nearby, on our city trails, but this will be great for getting steps in when I can’t (temps too hot, rain, etc).

I dream of an air-conditioned workout studio in the backyard overlooking another of my dreams: lap pool. :D

  • last month

Yeah, I'm not into rebounders either these for cardio or else they have them that attach to the Pilates reformers. Unfortunately, as you experienced, you can injure your knees if you don't know what you are doing. I remember one of my undergrads tore her ACL at a trampoline place with her nephew, so I don't need to deal with risk of that.

The studio I take virtual Zumba does some virtual jump classes by Zoom. Look upFitHappenz LLC out of Buffalo. I think the virtual jump is on Sunday mornings. You can pay per class/livestream or look them up on Instagram.

Well, your exercise "machine" looks rather entertaining!

I have the world's most boring machine ever - a treadmill. It inclines and so I can give myself a pretty decent workout trotting uphill on it. Notice I said TROT. I have discovered my actual running days are long over.

Have I mentioned that I hate it? LOL. But I know exercise is so important for us, and I was an outside runner for decades. So most days of the week I put on some upbeat music and force myself to get on that thing and slowly trot my way uphill....

I'd much rather eat a cookie. Again, LOL.

It sounds fun… I am 100% sure I would fall off, though.

I keep looking at the walking pads. I don’t want a full treadmill…we had one, but replaced it with a Peloton. I follow a woman on IG who seems to be having a blast on her walking pad. But I don’t know anyone IRL that has one.

Ally, I’d rather have a cookie, too! Let’s blow off exercising today and go get treats that are bad for us. ;) Or we could eat cookies while we walk and jump?

Sue, I’d also like to get a walking pad. I don’t have anywhere to put a full size treadmill. DD got one (walking pad) a couple of years ago, she works from home and put it in her office, but the belt kept messing up. I see that on a lot of reviews across many brands. If you get one, please let me know!

Thank you, bl! I love that sweet story. :)

I had one without the bar. I used it much like legomom. I created a mix tape of some favorite music -- some slower stuff to begin, then more upbeat - active dance type and then a cool down at the end. I think I had 2 or 3 to mix it up a little. I think I used some hand weights for more impact from the arm movements at times, but there was no set routine or program and certainly nothing like that photo.

Love the bunny story. We had a bunny that took up residence between the raised beds and our fence. DH put a flat board for kneeling along the edge and it formed a perfect burrow for him/her. We saw momma bunny come vist and check of the younger one. I loved watching him when he came to check out the spills from our bird feeder. He ate my flowers too, but alwasy left enough that they bounced right back. I bought more so there were always some in bloom and we were both happy. I wish he could have moved with us.

lascatx, I was wondering about hand weights, thanks for sharing your experience. I’m not coordinated enough yet, but will work towards that.

Love your bunny story, too! :)

Sidenote: no knee pain at all today. Took it slow yesterday!

SueB, I’ve had a treadmill workstation for about 10 years now. So it’s basically a platform desk with a treadmill that doesn’t incline and only goes to 4 mph. I have a laptop stand, accessory keyboard and a second monitor to keep it ergonomic. I will often walk after dinner to help with blood glucose control usually at 2 mph. I can do some online grading or some course updates.

Look for brands on places like Am that have good reviews. Mine is Lifespan but I bought it as a whole system.

What a great fun idea to add some extra joy into your exercise! I was never allowed to jump on trampolines as a child. When we bough this house it had a trampoline and I thought we'd probalby want to remove it, but then I tried it. Nope. The trampoline stays. I don't do anything terribly acrobatic, but just bouncing on it is a bit of a workout. A month ago my neice and nephew begged me to play on their trampoline with them and wow was I exhausted after a while.

I follow youtubers for safe routines. The importance of beginning with the ”health bounce” is stressed (soft bend in the knees, gentle bounce with feet remaining in contact with the mat). Earth and Owl is a great channel but there are several others.

    Hi Jilly,

I got a rebounder about 9 months ago, and love it! Its a pretty firm B Scan brand.

I started by watching a beginner video on Earth and Owl on Youtube,

(https://m.youtube.com/@EarthOwl), which really helped with form and posture.

I now usually bounce 'free-form' for about 12 minutes, then do a 15 minute video with music I like. There are dozens to choose from on Earth and Owl.

Btw, i bounce in stocking feet, and I'm 76. You're going to love it!
