Will this look ridiculous?

last month
last modified: last month

Will the size of this Audubon print look ridiculous on this wall in our small bathroom? Print is 38" x 22", area of wall is 44" x 40. The colors look fantastic in here but the size is obviously not optimal. Should I make it work or donate it?

We've had it for years but have yet to rehang it since moving to our apartment five years ago. This wall is concrete so having someone drill to hang it feels like a commitment. It will get slightly damp in here but I'm okay with that.

I think it will be perfect. The proportions and colors both look great to me

Well, I feel a little silly even commenting, after all of my "Art Questions", but I think the size is great! The colors are perfect--I really like the dark mat color. What are your plans for the other walls we can see?

That would look wonderful there! Please show us after. :)

These are encouraging votes so far!

@tvq1 - The other walls I may leave blank. I've become a fan of negative space and minimalism, which is probably why I've been on the fence about the size of this. To the right of the toilet is a pedestal sink with a wood framed hexagonal mirror above it that everyone on Houzz hates, but I love!

It will look great. I have cement walls also, (MCM) have lots of art, the best thing I ever purchased were hangers specifically for use on cement walls, even the nails don’t bend when pounding in, think I ordered from Amazon. One framed piece (3’ x 5’ ) was hung using two, one on each corner.

PS ….. I’m somewhat of a minimalist too but I love art, prefer one larger piece over lots of smaller, like gallery walls, not a fan. I recall the mirror, antique?, I liked it, lol.

@K Laurence, I confess to never having hung anything myself in these walls. We've either had the building handyman or a professional art hanger do it. They both used special drills.

I used to be a total maximalist. Made gallery walls in my teenage bedroom with cereal boxes before I knew what a gallery wall was. Now that I can actually afford real art and nice art, I prefer minimalism. One perfect piece is good enough for me.

This poster is from my more maximalist days. I'd never buy it now. Another reason why I'm on the fence. But, I don't want to hang good art in here because of occassional shower usage.

I would hang it there. Art placement is a personal decision and some people believe there are strict rules for it, but there aren't!

I have a large piece on a "small" wall and it works for me. It was the only wall I had left in my open family room and I like the piece in that room, so it fits!

Can't you use command hooks? I haven't used them, but plenty of people on the forums use them regularly.

@Kendrah ….. yes, a handyman hung the large piece, hanging it level was beyond my skills. I’ve hung everything else though, probably my smallest piece is 36” x 28” ….. those hangers worked great for me. I was skeptical of using command hooks, I’ve had some fail & my art is framed nicely.

I agree it will look great. I’ve had one fail with a Command picture hanger on the side of a wood cabinet...broken frame and glass. The rest on painted walls have been great. Just be aware of weight.

It will not look ridiculous. And I think it's gorgeous. But only you can know if you want to keep it or say goodbye to it along with a "past you."

FWIW, I've had art reframed specifically to help protect it against damp, knowing I'd be hanging it in a bathroom. It may not be necessary to sign up for that additional expense, but worth considering before you "commit to the (drill) bit."

I advise against using a Command™ hook to hang anything framed with glass. For myself, I won't hang anything damageable with stretch-release adhesive. I love those hooks for other uses, but not for art.

Have your husband or someone else hold it up and look at it to decide for yourself if you like it. And it is a really nice piece!

Yes, I will have my husband hold it up when he gets home from work.

I have used command hooks for light things but wouldn't want to use it for a larger framed piece with glass.

My tastes have really changed in the last 15 years since I purchased this. I don't dislike it. But I used to love it. We hung it in our former kitchen, which had gigantic widows with trees, ivy, and birds outside. And my grandparents had Audubon prints in their guest room when I was a kid.

I had planned on using this bathroom as a powder room and hanging more valueable art I love in it. But, this bathroom has a 36" x 36" shower, which we only used for dog baths, until this month when I had surgery and found the grab bars and extra space nicer than standing in our tub shower. I've kind of gotten used to showering in here. No longer a place for better art.

Love it. It will be perfect on that wall.

Love it! At that size, it will function almost like a fancy wallpaper accent wall. And it feels like just the right amount of color to bring a little "something" to your black and white bathroom, but not too much.

Yes to going big and bold with the print. In GN Builders version it looks great especially with the vintage tile. LOL, not so sure about the toilet though.

I appreciate everyone’s feedback but most especially the the fish tank. That would make going to the bathrooom so much more fun.

Just a thought…if you painted the walls (and even the ceiling) a deeper green, the art would pop/pull the room together and be feel more unique.

I also like @Maureen’s suggestion to paint the upper walls green. Something smoky like BM Vintage Vogue comes to mind…

I'd need some color......: ) at 75% of current size, but that's just me./ Agree on walls lending a stark effect too. I might even re frame.

Better yet with an ivory mat, but I wasn't that ambitious.

@Maureen - Though it doesn't show in this pic, the walls actually read green. It's Farrow & Ball Mouse's Back. I was amazed when I took the fan deck in there and saw the grey brown card turn green.

@oncape - Good memory, we were renting a condo for a while, but this is our full time coop in NYC that we own. We can do whatever we want in here. I'm mad about grasscloth. Have always loved it. But, I really, really like the paint color in here. Hard to capture it in a picture, but it is a stellar color.

@JAN MOYER - I'm not invested enough in this piece to pay to reframe it.

@Jennifer Hogan - Yep, concrete ceiling too. PITA for hanging art but great in the instance of a fire.
