We need to see the space and the lights in the kitchen . The interweb is not a designer .

Another option is to use the largest chandelier that your table's width can support, then recessed lights on each side. We did that for our 100" dining table as DH disliked linear fixtures. It's great. The 2 2" cans give a decent amount of light on their own when we want just a little light. With the drum chandelier and the can lights on, the table is lit very evenly.

Five surface mounted lights in a single view is quite a lot of visual clutter. Add pictures all angles of kitchen and dining, and until you do that? No advice is totally valid: )

Adding to the 'lighting store" visual is that it sounds like this is a large open concept area. Have you moved in? Furniture might help the space appear more intimate. Large expanses give one the impression of a warehouse if not furnished well.

It's been done before. I think it looks good but do share your husbands concern about the lighting store look. Would a long linear chandelier be an option for you?

We have 2 large lanterns over our long dining table but it’s in a separate dining room so don’t have to worry about overkill - if you love the dining fixtures, could you skip pendants?

I guess it depends on what number of lights you think pushes you over into the lighting store category!
