What color BM paint would you use?

last month

We are repainting our living room and wondered what you’d suggest. We’re keeping the navy sofa and recovering the chairs to a solid beige. The rest of the house is painted BM gentle cream and wood floors with some red, so it all leans warm. It’s a west facing room so it can handle a mid tone paint or lighter.

I know Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray are safe but wondered about a more colorful choice.. Thanks Thanks.

Why not go for the gold?? Something like Farrow & Ball’s Cat’s Paw. Something equivalent to that in BM line- or have BM mix similar to the F&B.

Your room is really stunning. I just don’t see hum-drum working here. Especially going from your current wall color, basically to milk toast... I don’t know... But if you want some people to corale you into ”safe”- this is the place!!!!!!!!!

Edgecomb Gray could work, of course. It all depends on what you’d like to do.

Be sure to test to see how it looks at different times of the day.

Here’s a suggestion and remember accessory choices will also have a big influence.

Are you keeping or replacing the rug?

Consider uploading a room photo at a paint mfr website where you can virtually paint the room in various colors to see what colors are candidates.

A local paint store may have a designer on staff that can look at samples of your chair fabric and room photos to make some paint suggestions.

Once you have some paint candidates, Samplize has good size samples that you can hang on the walls to view them at various times of day.

Before selecting a paint color I would prime the walls, that way you’ll get a better feel for whatever color you sample. I thought Edgecomb Gray would be safe too but it turned violet in our house, lol, idk why. Expensive mistake for us.

Match the color of the rug fringe. It never fails. I can't see the fringe in your photo, so guessing at this one . OC-14 . Looks great with blue. Be careful with the fabric you choose for the chairs.

Maybe a sage green for the chairs?

Your style is very traditional. I always love Audubon prints with an oriental style rug.

So many good ideas. We are keeping the rug, sofa and (recovering) the chairs. I like the sage on the chairs. Interestingly, my daughter uploaded the pictures to AI and it said sage paint. I like everybody heres’ ideas better.

You made me realize, it would be easier to pick out color for the chairs and wall at the same time.

I will prime the walls first pick out the color. When I would try to decide what color I should paint my BM golden straw kitchen it totally distorted the colors.

Almost all of the colors looked grey on a yellow wall. I wish I knew then.

I absolutely love Audubon prints and they are all over my house.:We have any Acadian style. My husband loves the crab boats.

A green was my first thought , one from the rug. I probably would have done the chairs in a stripe wuth colors from the rug instaed of beige but a couple of pillows in colors like that will help. The room is needing lighting too I might try LED 3500 K to keep colors true and still feel traditional I love Healing Aloe BM and use it often for a true neutral and cut all the way to just a hint of color sometimes The best way to teast is poster boards painted 2 coats and then moved around at different times of the day to see how they look.

It seems a shame to prime walls merely for color selection - I usally hang a piece of huge white paper on the wall and then tape my samplize swatches on it, but in the case of red walls, I agree with priming first. The red can so easily bounce from other walls and reflect on the swatches you are choosing.

What are the wall colors of the other rooms that can be viewed from this room?

Yes, green can perfectly match and tie into your rug. But it feels overly matchy and kind of boring. Do you own a Benjamin Moore color wheel? It is a good investment. I'd sit on your rug and play with it to see what else comes up.

Since you are keeping the rug, Gentle Cream will still be a nice choice. Just test large swatches of GC and some greens to get a better sense. If you opt for green, be sure it’s soft/muted, to counter balance the strong rug and flooring. Consider using the same green on the wingbacks (and velvet would be lovely).

With either color, how you accessorize is key and consider a lighter feel.

    Don’t forget your coffee table.

The living area of the house and hall are going to be painted with BM Gentle Cream since the wood floors are medium brown with a red tint. I’m trying to keep it warm for the most part. Thanks everyone.

Have you already selected the fabric for your chairs? You need to have the exact fabric before you select wall paint.
