Cottage style Bedroom Inspiration

last month
last modified: 29 days ago

I am looking for design ideas for an 11x11 bedroom. Aiming for a cottage theme with a cozy "cabin in the woods" vibe. The wall is painted in 'Silver Gray' by Benjamin Moore. Any wall art, lamps, bedding, or rug suggestions are welcome!
Updated info:
1.This is my son's room. He has moved out and we want to make it as a retreat of a cottage room for him and his wife when they visit.
2.Wall paint color can be changed
3.The rug was used when the bed was moved to this room so it does scratch floor. Will be replacing the rug
4.Shutters will stay

Looks cottagey already but why is the rug under the bed? Gray walls in a cottage type style are not what I think of . The bedding works the rug makes no sense and you need at least one lamp and california shutters never say cottage to me .

Textiles and layered patterns are what makes a cottage vibe. Check out this picture. You might not like the darker more masculine vibe, but patterns are what makes this place cozy.

    - Go on Etsy and find a quilt you love to fold at the bottom of your bed. This will the base color you start with.

    - Remove the shutters from hinges, store elsewhere. Hang light blocking shades and lighter weight patterned curtain.

    - Get a much larger rug with a slight pattern and texture.

    - Hang wall scones on either side of the bed with pleated, patterned shades.

    - Wall art needs to be something you love. We can't pick it out for you. I'd go for a few smaller pieces that feel collected rather than one large piece.

This is cordless from Pookie, and you can select from a variety of shades.

Facebook markeplace is a goldmine for bedside tables - I’d start there and get ones that are large enough for nice sized lamps, book, glasses etc

fwiw I just did a few cottagey bedrooms at a new lake build and bought pairs of vintage brass lamps off Marketplace (very inexpensive) then had fun with new cottagey lampshades (ticking stripe, toile etc)

Add to bedside tables - find with 2 or 3 drawer ears in each for guests to unpack their luggage. A coat tree in the room is great to hang clothes, pj’s, towels, ets.

Maybe reach out to them and see what they would like, their preferred color scheme (suggest going a bit darker for a cozier feel ), bedding (duvet?), functionality, etc. Your daughter in law especially might be pleased to have been asked.

Maybe show them different variations of cozy/cottage/cabin (may help you too).

    1. Everything changes knowing this is a guest room. Figure out furniture and function first.

Do they pack in a suitcase? Do they want a place to unload their clothing or prefer to live out of the suitcase?

A big bench at the foot of the bed is great for placing bags, purses, suitcases.

Place a row of hooks somewhere that they can sling a bathrobe, purse, backpack, hat, whatever.

Have a good surface for charging with an outlet strip near the bed.

Put a full length mirror in here somewhere and a surface for extra toiletries nearby.

Place a bedside table on each side of the bed. Use a wall mounted light to give enough space for glasses, a drink, pills, phone.

    2. Do you want to make this into a cottage bedroom look because they like that look or because you like that look and it is your house, your money, and you have to look at it the rest of the time?

Guest rooms can look really fully and kind of junky with everyone's belongings in them. I'd go for a steamlined look. Paint the walls the same color as the shutters. They are really clunky looking and this will help them disappear.

The wood tones of your furniture and floor will become a focal point. Find a rug you love. Then get simple bedding that looks good with it.

Don't put too many pillows or throws on here that will just end up on the floor and mixed among their bags and other belongings.

After these basics are all in place, then see what decorative elements, like pictures and objects, the space has room for.

I like Maureen’s suggestion to get your son & DIL’s preferences. Obviously it‘s your home but it would be nice to get their input. For example , my son & grandchildren all like very minimal modern design. The guest rooms are decorated in that style, not slavishly, but leaning in that direction. A folding luggage stand is handy in guest rooms, we have upholstered benches & nightstands on both sides of the beds in the guest rooms.

When I stay at someone's home, I am not concerned with the type of style of the room. What's important to me are the items listed by Kendrah in her above comment.

When I changed my two daughters former rooms into guest rooms, I didn't consult with them - I just updated them to an adult style that worked with the rest of my home. My oldest daughter loved how her old room looked when they came to visit the first Christmas after I renovated the bathroom + bedroom.

I don't feel like you need to consult with your son and DIL - it's not like they will be living there with you - they are just visiting. They will be happy with whatever "style" you want to do in there. After all, they are coming to spend time with you - they aren't renting a room on Air BnB.

What colors do you have in the rest of your home? Do you want this room to be a stand-alone style or blend with the decor in the rest of your home? Do you mean grandma cottage or rustic cabin cottage? Will the current upholstered bed be staying? What color is the fabric on the bed?

Try the bed in the corner. It works well in small rooms, as it gives a feeling of more space.

There is a bedspread on amazon that I have used many times for the cottages. It all an all in one cover and bedskirt.

    Ticking, in four colors:

Panels to match (and still keep the shutters; just hant the rod at leasst 3" highers and wider than the window frame.)

    Linen:

Lush Decor is the name of the brand.

Here are some features guests appreciate--reread Kendra's excellent suggestions.

--Keep everything very simple so people can easily find their things.

--Bedside lamps and night tables to put down phone, keys, books. Some small table lamps come with charging outlets in the base.

--Rug large enough to step on barefoot when getting up or going to sleep

--Bench at the end of the bed. And yes to some hooks on the walls and back of the doors for towels, jackets, etc.

--Add a small desk and desk chair to set up iPad or laptop.

--The right piece of art can create a cabin or outdoor feeling.

@Kendrah and @housegal200 got a lot of the details right. Decorate the room to be cohesive, with your house, but add two quilts to the bed. One that is for sleeping and one that they might need if the room gets cold in the middle of the night. Two
pillows per person (one with a pillowcase that matches the bedding, one that matches the rug).
The area rug should show on each side so every sleeper has something warm underfoot. Don’t buy something too small.
    Nice to have for guests:
A robe per person, extra toothbrushes and toothpaste, two towels each (one set can be folded in the closet or nearby), a lamp on each side that works for reading, enough plugs to accommodate two need-to-be-charged devices on each side.

As for decor, it needs to feel right to you since you will be living with it way more days a year than any guest. A “cottage bedroom” in a non-cottage house will be weird.

Be sure to make this a room you love the looks of. My guest rooms have always doubled as a place for me to take a nap in the afternoon and a desitination when my husband or I gets sick and are kicked out of our bedroom.

the windows don't lend any balance to the space. You don't really show where any closets or doorways are located in this space but on first glance I would move the bed to the wall on the riight. The off center window is problematic so i would dress the wall with draperies do the bed can be centered. I would flank the bed with two chests. dress the other window with drapery panels as well. Get an area rug that is the correct sixe for the room. A bed that lends itself to the cottage style and then load up that bed with different prints and solids. The same for the lamp shades on the bedside lamps. Pleated in a small scale print.

just saw you added more details so you may want something more masculine

Is your home a cottage style ? I dislike even B&Bs that are too fussy with decor because I like clean and there is no way they wash all that stuff everytime they have a guest. I agree Kendrah has a good list of musts for a guest room and as for cottage style you need to come back and at least tell us which pics you liked .

I think you already have a really nice foundation for the cozy cottage look, especially with the shutters and the softer wall color. For a “cabin in the woods” feel, I’d probably lean into warmer textures and more natural materials. The more textures the better.

A softer rug in a warm neutral tone would help a lot. Something with a subtle vintage or woven look could make the room feel much more relaxed and layered. I’d also consider warmer lighting with table lamps instead of bright overhead light. That tends to completely change the mood of a bedroom in the evenings.

For bedding, earthy tones like oatmeal, forest green, warm cream, or muted plaid accents would fit the cottage vibe really well. A fuller duvet with a bit of loft also helps make a guest room feel much more inviting and comfortable.

I run a bedding store called Luxury Sleep Shop, and one thing that’s interesting to me is how guest rooms tend to feel the most memorable when they have a slightly rustic, relaxed, more lived in look instead of feeling too “styled.” A bed with some puffy, softer layers, and natural textures usually gives people that quiet cozy cottage feeling, more so than a tight sleek hotel styled bed. It’s the kind of room where people end up wanting to read a book for an hour before going to sleep instead of just using it as a place to crash for the night.

Florals do not come to mind for me. Cabins or cottages in the woods have vintage pieces and hand-me-downs.

Sky blue paint is appropriate for a cabin but here is a soft earth tone:

I also don't think there should be shock decor radically different from the rest of the house

For a rustic cabin kind of look, I would consider an earthy green for the walls. It would look so pretty with your wood floors. A plaid rug on the floor will bring in the cabin feel.

Add nightstands in a wood tone.

I think sconces instead of a lamp would work well because of the asymmetrical windows. I would use adjustable arm sconces that can be brought down for reading.

Add a cozy quilt and shams

    Add a fun throw blanket

    And a few accent pillows

If there's room, you could add a bench at the end of the bed.
