Any interest in helping me design my engagement ring??!!

Well, I think I'm finally ready to say "yes" to my SO . . . it's only been 16 years (on and off - but mostly on) = I need to determine how I want my engagement ring to look.

I'm not sure if I'm drawn to yellow gold because it seems "new" again. . .

My engagement ring (when I was married) was brilliant cut solitaire in white gold prongs with a simple yellow gold solitaire setting - however, I've been engaged since my divorce - and that was a radiant in a platinum setting with tapered baguettes on the sides).

I'm trying first to decide on the shape/cut . . .

Elongated cushion (top one is old mine cut I believe) :

(I don't want knife shaped - just thinking about platinum bezel with 18 kt yellow setting):

East-west set emerald:

Asscher:

Elongated oval:

You'd think I'd know what I want - but I really am confused.

I'd love ideas - I don't want something with a lot of extra little diamonds - I'm leaning towards just a single diamond. However, if there is something that you think is beautiful - I'd love to see it.

How exciting, @dani_m08! I like the elongated cushions as they are unique. To me the oval and asscher cut (or sq cut) are cuts that are seen and have had periods of popularity.

Does your gut call out to one of these cuts? Or to SO? They are all stunning and any one of them would be gorgeous on you.

    SO happy for you, dani--congratulations!!!

I love an east/west setting and either of those stones would look beautiful. I have no idea what's "in" or "out" in engagement rings. I happen to like settings with millgrain and pave diamonds, as was popular in the early 20th century.

    Here are some ideas:

    East/west

    North south

ooh first and foremost CONGRATULATIONS and thank you sharing such a happy update!

I do not know anything about jewelry trends. I don't even know the terms you are using, but they are all gorgeous.

The one that really caught my eye is the second one Diana shared.

( Mine from 1979 which I still love is a round one in yellow gold)

Congrats! I don't think you can tell without trying a bunch on. Have you been shopping?

Congratulations! Very exciting! Wishing you many many years of happiness.

Personally I am not a fan of the east/west settings. They just seem very trendy to me. Not that there is anything wrong with that if it's what you love. Also, resetting a diamond in a new setting in several years is not a big deal if your tastes change.

    I love cushion cut diamonds.

I agree with mtn. I think trying them on will tell you which your heart wants.

Oh and don't forget to share the final choice ;-)

Congratulations! I love those elongated cushion cuts - swoon. Agree to trying on a number of options and see what sparks joy. I would be torn on the yellow gold/platinum/white gold decision so will be interested in what you decide. Enjoy the process - you've already made the most important choice :).

Congratulations! What fun to be ring shopping. I was asking here recently about how comfortable women were wearing large diamonds for daily wear and there seemed to be a split decision.

I agree with others that trying various styles on will help you make a decision. With AI, you can see various styles on your hand without trying on a physical ring.

Do you have other rings that you enjoy wearing often. Would any of those lead you to a shape or style that might translate to an engagement ring?

Personally, I love Art Deco and Edwardian vintage rings. A platinum setting on a gold band is a great way to make the stones sparkle more, but give you more flexibility with the dual metal colors.

How exciting! I know the elongated rectangular and oval and even marquise are super popular now. I like the elongated look overall. I also have emerald but 3 stone with smaller side stones. Also think about how high of a seeing you want and if you want side stones. I see a lot of color too in side stones. So there’s a lot to think about including what type of band you see going with it.

Well first things first - Congratulations! I hope you and your future DH have many years of happiness.

I agree that it would be helpful to try them on. Have you looked on any of the popular sites like Blue Nile or Brilliant Earth? You can select the size and shape of a stone and then play around with settings. Do you have any preferences for the overall look? Modern, vintage, Art Deco, unique, traditional? Do you prefer the sparkle that comes with a brilliant or radiant - or perhaps the clean lines and mirror look of an emerald cut or Asscher? Have you thought about using a stone other than a diamond? So many options.

At least you've already made the big decision by selecting your partner. Now you can fun with the more decorative aspect.

The GIA has an interesting article on choosing a diamond shape and how the shape affects the appearance.

I haven't gone out to try any on - however, I am going to post a few photos of my own rings - and the shapes that I like the most (including an elongated cushion type one) + on my hand in order to show finger size/length.

There are many women who are wearing engagement rings with HUGE diamonds/gems - I will not be one of those women. I know lab diamonds have contributed to the many large stones. However, that's just not my style.

My last engagement ring was about 2.25 cts (radiant) - I felt that size was more than enough for my finger (I wear a size 5.25).

I really liked emerald cut diamonds - I almost had a three stone one for my last engagement ring (larger emerald in middle with smaller emerald side stones) - but decided on the radiant one instead. I am really torn between step cuts and brilliant cuts.

I have more thoughts - however, it's late and I need some sleep. I'll post photos tomorrow.

Thank you for all of the congratulations! 💕

DD had the center stone my mother's mid-1950s engagement ring made into a right hand ring.. It is just over 1ct. It sits low, so a band will not fit against it, but can be designed to sit higher for a wedding band.

THIS is the person's IG account.

I have an Old Euro diamond necklace. The diamonds have a lot of sparkle due to their cuts, it is a different than modern cut diamonds.

Have you thought about the band? I would decide in conjunction. Personally, I prefer eternity bands to solitaire engagement rings. EG

    Congratulations!

I think many women don't wear their expensive rings because they don't fit properly and they are afraid of losing them.

I have large knuckles, but thinner fingers. A ring that goes over the knuckle will be way too big on the lower finger and will constantly spin. I tried spacers, balls, etc and none worked well.

I had my engagement ring and wedding bands re-made into one ring with a wider Finger Mate shank.

I found this link and this jeweler does a good job of explaining how it is done and the benefits.

Instead of an engagement ring DH gave me diamond stud earrings. For our 10 year anniversary he gave me a ring similar to an eternity band. I swap between my gold wedding band and the diamond ring depending on the occasion. I wear the earrings 90% of the time.
