Length of pulls for upper stacked kitchen cabinets

I’m installing upper stacked cabinets in my kitchen - 17” tall cabinets at the ceiling & 35” tall cabinets under them (all above the countertop). I’m using vertical pulls - should the pull lengths be proportional to the size of each cabinet in the stack - or the same size?

Same size
Proportional

Context is key. Post up pics.

I need to see the cabinets and layout. The pulls on the top ones will need to be reachable So 106" ceiling or did you do the first row of uppers 20" from the counter ? IMO wait until the cabinets are in then post a pic here of the exact issue you are dealing with. I use painters tape to decide direction and size of pulls and that is always just what looks right with the layout and the style of cabinets. I often mix vertical and horizontal too. This pic just shows that mix and proportional sizing. The difference in direction here is because pulls might hit eachother .

I keep posting this, but it’s a good comprehensive piece on kitchen hardware:

Put knobs on the upper stacked cabinets.

For me, too many vertical pulls makes it look like a kitchen is full of exclamation marks!

I would do knobs on the upper stack and pulls in the 35" rule of thumb 1/3 the size of the overall height of the door.

Strange - I thought I had attached a photo! Thanks to all of you for helping me! I plan to use vertical pulls for the cabinets (up & down) and horizontal pulls for drawers.

I'm not inclined to do a combination of pulls & knobs - the space isn't that large, and I'm trying to avoid too much "busy-ness" with the cabinets. With the stacked cabinets, I'm considering 5-1/16" or 6-5/16" bars for the lower ones & 3-3/4" for the top ones. Your thoughts?

For context, here's a photo of a finished kitchen with the same cabinets, but the pull sizes are the same regardless of the cabinet height.

Still voting for knobs for the stacked cabinets ... specially if you want less "busy-ness".

The short answer to your question is the pulls need to be proportioned to the cabinet door and drawer sizes so yes they would be different sizes. The point I think most of us are making is knobs are less busy than pulls and the rule of thumb for hardware sizing is 1/3 the size of the surface.

Considerations: what are your plans under the counter, as that’s key in the overall effect. Given handles on the uppers, it makes any other choice on the bottom difficult. I also think 5-6 inch bars would be a mistake if you don’t want busy.

Think about the impact on the kitchen overall. Suggest bringing home different options to actually get a feel of where/what. Everyone is suggesting mixing and I think it’s worth testing, as there is no going back once holes are drilled.

I think smaller proportions would be better if using handles only.

I find this combination has a softer, less busy feel.

WOW, thank you all SO much for the time and expertise you've given me to help with this decision; I'm blown away. Especially to Design Interior South for literally showing me what the different decisions would look like! And the articles were great. I'm 95% moved to the pull/knob idea - you've sold me! Thank you, thank you.

It will also be considerably cheaper!
