when you say table, do you mean table and chairs?

Not sure how much farmhouse toning down you want - rugs, chandeliers and chairs can make a difference (see idea with different chairs on the ends). Suggest making your changes first and then consider if the buffet works. Just updating how one is accessorized can have a big influence.

I think I would like to keep the chairs. The chandelier is a Hubbardton Forge, which was very expensive but I did buy it years ago, so I could part with it I thought I would get of rug. The picture is a more modern Jazz picture & I could change the frame picture

I would paint the top black and replace the chairs with something lighter in color.

Btw, I am not able to see the dining room chandelier that you just mentioned. It is not visible in your pics.

Definitely keep the Jazz art. I can’t see it, but art is art... It is quite a personal matter.

What style would you like to replace the farmhouse style with?

There's a lot of black so I wouldn't paint anything else black. I agree about the rug, even though it's not farmhouse it also has too much black.

You might consider upholstered chairs for your table.

The art is great. Thank you for showing it. It’s great in general, and also perfect for a dining room- with the people hanging out at the club. Why is it too big? It doesn’t look too big to me.

Your existing chairs are fine. Just go rugless. Problem solved. Anything else is just gravy- in terms of if you want bring in a new ceiling light, etc.

It’s a nice chandelier. No reason you can’t keep it. If you do, maybe consider some buffet lamps with black shades. Would connect with the table and chairs, the art, as well as some of the darker elements in the kitchen.

Could be more low profile than the ones in my visual. Smaller shades, etc. If you search for buffet lamps, you will see various options. And the black shades is just one idea.

Thank you for your suggestions. The buffet lamps sound like a good idea. I don’t think the painting is too big. I just think I soul like to change it to a more modern frame. The buffet’s depth is twenty inches deep. Since the island chairs stick out, I was thinking of finding something narrower but not sure where to go with that. I also was wondering whether I should paint the chairs & table legs & go with lighter colors.

Try removing the rug, and then see how you feel about the rest.

You have a dark island base and fairly dark kitchen cabinetry- so going ”light and bright” on the dining table and chairs may seem out of sync. I don’t think you need to paint the furniture.

Also, with the rug out of the space, it may make the space feel a little less tight; so you can then evaluate whether you still want to get a narrower buffet.

I can understand a more modern frame for the art. Maybe a simple black floating frame.

I think freedomplace1 has a good idea about removing the rug and seeing how you feel about the space. I do think the buffet is a pretty heavy looking piece so you might consider replacing it with one that has less depth and not black.

New host chairs, new upholstery fabric on chairs, new decor on buffet, new curtains, new natural fibre rug and chandelier.

Another +1 to @freedomplace1 suggestion to remove the rug — sometimes when i am struggling with a space stripping everything out but the furniture can help me see it better

Your original comment was that you wanted to keep the table, so I thought you were open to changing the chairs. But obviously that's your choice. You're not going to totally eliminate the farmhouse vibe without changing any of the furniture. So just change the rug and see how that works for you.

Thanks for all your ideas. I also think the black buffet is too heavy for the room. When I bought it I had a different table. It’s a beautiful piece but I think I should part with it. Also, I am going to change the fabric on the chairs and gang curtains.

The dining table pretty much screams "FARMHOUSE". My best suggestion is to cover the table with a tablecloth to hide the farmhouse look.

What is the measurement from the edge of the island to the wall with the buffet?

What is the measurement of the table (width and length)?

Is there any other room in your house for the black buffet?

Sorry putting a table cloth on the table will just enhnace the farmhouse look. I would remove the buffet then see about a different light maybe and IMO the 2 head chairs are not appropriate for any farmhouse or other style ,. The table is farmhouse no getting around it so new chairs different style and new stools not farmhouse will be the best you can do. I woul try some color for the chairs and stools

Removing the rug will make a big change. I'm not convinced the buffet is too large.

I'd remove all the decor items from the top of the buffet, and remove the big plant, and the vine across the top of the door. Because this is really one big room with plenty of decor items around the fireplace, a fairly bare dining area may give you the fresh look you are wanting.

One problem with the room right now is the rug is not centered. Yes, the front of the buffet will be on the rug, but resulting in the bar stools being on bare floor; the table centered under the light and centered on the slider. It now can be pulled closer to the slider for a perfectly place rug for the space.

Consider replacing chairs with ghost chairs. Eliminates the bulky look and shows more of the rug.

Can't see the chandelier, so no comment on it.

Buffet...better, larger art and some lamps will brighten the area.
