I would first start with a much larger lighter color rug. Take off the slipcovers so we can see what you are working with. I think I would angle the furniture with the FP> Sofa facing FP.

I would definitely try the angled layout. Then you can better determine what size rug is needed. I don't mind the dark walls (I have a navy blue dining room with bright white trim). I would paint the 2 accent walls to match the other walls. Use the art for color. Also I would add window treatments to soften the stark look. Pay attention to that step when doing the angling layout.

A wooden rocking chair is the epitome of frump. Have you considered removing it from this room?

The prettiest most finished rooms have curtain panels. You could elevate your space so much with proper window treatments. . We need to see the furniture w/o the slip covers. They are doing nothing positive for the chairs.

I don't see a TV screen anywhere, but if you decided to add one, the orange wall could be a great backdrop for a TV.

Here is a new furnishings arrangement for your room. I suggest you turn your area rug, which is currently not nearly large enough, to run parallel to the windows, The rug for your room should be 9 x 12 and I'd eliminate any burgundy color from the room. Place your seating in this conversational arrangement.

The room would look softer with drapes at the windows and a color coordinated area rug as you see below.

I don’t see any mention of the art on the wall with the 2 doorways. Look back at the arrangement @BeverlyFLADeziner shows in her photo with the drapery panels. See how the art is pulled closer together for a much more impactful arrangement. I’d strongly suggest doing that. Play with the arrangement of individual pieces but do pull them into a gallery like arrangement.

The sofa table/console is too tall to be behind a sofa. A piece that is a bit shorter than the back of the sofa will look more balanced.

I know you said you do not want to change the paint but it is making the space look choppy and it doesnt work with your furniture or your flooring . Painting those short walls just makes them stand out and they are not an architectural feature you want to be highlighting. It is also making your art diminish. So the first thing I would do is open up the space visually by painting the room.

You should be bringing in your color in other ways. Rugs, drapery , pillows, furnishings, art and through your large windows.

I like the angled seating it works . do you feel like there is enough pathway space near the leather chair?

Another option would be to do this layout.

if I were walking into this space I would

1. paint one cohesive color through out

2. get a larger new area rug that compliments your dining rug

3 do drapery panels on all windows in a color

4 replace your lamps with something a bit more rustic that works with the fireplace stone and furnishings

5. condense your art . it will make it more impactful. dont spread it out over the entire wall condense it to the area between the doorways and above the sideboard

6 take the painting off the red wall and place it over the fireplace.

7 you didnt mention the dining chairs which are fine but if you wanted to warm up that area i would do slip overed chairs there
