No sealing, ever. Maybe if I was bothered with borers to a serious degree, I would seal, but their pressure here is negligible.

Some people put thumb tacks on cut ends, but the short shanks make it easy for them to pop off. I have even seen borer holes right at the edge of thumb tacks where the cut end stuck out just a bit, but enough space for a borer to set up housekeeping. It's actually not the borers who venture about, but their mothers who deposit eggs at cut cane ends.

Use upholstery nails instead of thumb tacks......far more substantial....longer shanks and larger nail heads.

Alternatives are: waterproof wood glue, and acrylic tube paints (a generous dab). A bright color will be easy to see where you've dabbed before.

I've never done it, but I don't think I've had cane borers. Coastal So. Calif.

Thumb Tacks. I can see how it one could -cap- the end for sealing purposes , although a bit tedious, for me, a bottle goes faster.....of doing the chore at hand anyway. I aim to seal after each selective cut....as sometimes the cut get's lost and I need to find it if I do it post pruning. Just a quick squeeze of the bottle and it's sealed.

I don’t seal spring pruning and yes, I do end up with some bore holes. Deadheading rest of season gets sealed with Elmer’s exterior wood glue. My deadheading time would be reduced at least by 2/3’s if I didn’t seal. I’ve not sealed some seasons in the past and saw way to much bore holes/damage.
