I was hoping to spark discussion on this "practice" (hang curtains much higher than the window frame).

When I decided to replace curtains in our bedroom, I came to this board for advice. Got a LOT of suggestions to hang 'em high. Gotta admit, I was swayed by descriptions and pictures. Decided against ceiling (too hard to reach at 10 ft). Almost did 8 ft until I discovered there were no studs at that level. Ended up with 7 ft curtains, same as originals.

Most pictures of tall curtains show them closed. The high-fashion shot I described showed open curtains. The dark green wall glaring between the khaki curtains made the installation look silly, not grand.

I kinda think that I was rescued from a bad decision by accidental circumstance. Guess I'm not a "hang 'em high" fan.

Depends on the style of drapes, the style of window, and even the location.

Generally drapes are similar to the wall color for a subtle look, not a major contrast.

It’s always personal preference. And that is the bottom line.

For much of my life, I have lived in older buildings, with high ceilings. My parents never hung curtains at the ceiling- and neither have I. I’ve hung them at window trim height, or a bit higher. It can already be enough of a task to maintain curtains, etc., when you have high ceilings; placing them at the ceiling potentially makes it harder. And I think if the ceilings are already high, there is no need for an “illusion of height”. Also, you can end up obscuring some of the architectural details of the window trim- and/or make the windows look squat and/or out of proportion.

If the ceilings are eight feet, and one wants to hang them higher, that makes sense- in terms of creating an illusion of height. It‘s still a matter of personal style and personal preference, though.

There are situations where hanging them high can work well.

I did not see the US Bank ad you are referring to. But I have seen many instances where, imo, the high-hung drapes are not flattering.

There are also ideas such as “decorating at eye level” and ”human scale”.

I remember visiting a friend. Their bedroom had the entire wall curtained behind the head of the bed. I could see a cocooning effect. Similar thing here.

Was their ceiling this high?

I can understand the cocooning effect you refer to. That can be nice. And maybe even curtains to the ceiling with a high ceiling, if it’s basically just the wall behind the bed.

The image I posted looks a lot like my current ceiling height and window height; and I’ve mostly lived in places with similar high ceilings. It’s above human scale. So personally, I would not hang curtains on the windows to the ceiling, much less engulf myself in them. To me, it’s too much.
