My work (city rec) recently implemented a new app for all city employees and it's extremely annoying - full of category labels that are confusing and opaque, and it times out of signing in after something like 1 minute - about the length of time it takes to receive a texted passcode and enter it into the app 🤨

You gotta wonder whose crony/relation got that contract...

Could it be that one of the reasons for this craziness are thieves and scammers that figure out meters and apps and get the goodies before the township does?

I would think that a scammer worth his salt would figure out how to plunder them all at one time. And if it is an inside job it could go on for quite a while.

Oh, and when I used the app, it had to text me a verification code in order to use it.

My Amazon password is much simpler.

I have a notebook. Otherwise I would be toast. I have been meaning to do a new notebook since many of the companies and passwords are no longer of any use. I hate it.

Long ago, I bought something from Zappos (remember them?) Several years later, I wanted to order something again. My password no longer worked. I tried to reset it, no good. Tried to open a new account, but my email address was already in use. I bought from Amazon.

Pretty much everything is owned by like 6 people now. The rest of us are just pawns anymore.

Everything is about weighing pros and cons. If the cost to you (in time, money, brain power, whatever) is greater to you than the value, then don't bother. I understand their security choices, and they'll accept the results (whether good or bad). I get to make similar choices.

Get yourself a good password manager, and that can make things easier.

I don't have any parking apps (really no need for me) but DH has a couple. But we were at our local University last week for an appt and although the parking lot did have an app you could also use a credit card. My DH used all 5 of his cards and they all came up as invalid. I used my sole credit card which is the same as one of his and it worked. He was lucky I was with him.

I won't tell you where I keep my list of passwords.

When you let chrome or similar handle PWs life is easier. Less control but easier.

The parking apps drive me crazy. can you use the same email and password for every parking app I wonder? At least it’s only one thing to remember. Store it in a well-labeled file on your phone and just copy and paste?

If the parking apps are individual and separate from each other, you can use the same email and password. I use two different parking apps for different cities where I live and use the same email and password for each.

Learned a couple of new tricks this afternoon about securing written lists of passwords: If you take a photo of your list, you can label it as "hidden" on iPhones, and that requires your iPhone security to see it (facial or passcode). It will be in the "hidden" folder and won't be seen by anyone else looking at your photos. Or, you could write it in the Notes app on your iPhone and then "lock" the notes so it requires your iPhone security to unlock it.

I'm happy with my password manager (Codebook) - I've been using it about 10 years now.

@sushipup, I have had the same experience many times, especially lately. I get stuck trying to change a password and finally just give up and send a complaint to customer service. Of course they want to help you spend money with them so within a day or two they respond. Sometimes I take the time to get back with them so they can help sort it out and most times I have already found somewhere else to buy what i need.

As for parking apps, they drive me nuts! I forget where i was but I was digging around trying to find quarters to put in a parking meter, only to find out they will take a credit card. I wasn’t going to be parked long but entered an hour anyway to make sure I’d have time. It rang up as something like 28 cents. I hope it costs them more than that to do the transfer from my bank to get their money.

My smartphone remembers passwords that most apps request. It has some kind of password "vault". I've never looked into how it works or what triggers it.

I just checked with my major bank credit card app. I opened it - my name was entered, the password line was blank. I touched the password entry area and a message appeared saying "Password for (bank name) - My name, then a key symbol". I touch that, enter the PIN for the phone, and the password is filled in.

Check - maybe your phone will do that too.

Most web browser can save passwords for auto-entry at the respective site. Some are more secure than others in how that data is saved. I always make my passwords VERY long. My WiFi password is 23 characters. A few sites/services limit to 8-10, which greatly irritates me.

dadoes, as far as I know, bespoke parking apps on a smartphone (I have a few) are the only way to use services like ParkMobile and ParkSmarter . Maybe a browser would work but I wonder if the same user capabilities would be available.

^hilarious!! I don't use my phone for any business or anything that would require a password. I don't think it is safe, even if everyone in the world tells me it is. I don't really care what anyone else does so it's not a problem for me. If it's important, it's on my laptop and the password in a notebook. I'm pretty good about remembering about where in the book it is. It works for me.

I guess I wasn't clear.... I don't have a problem recalling the password. I have a problem with a exceptionally long/complicated password required for something that can only charge $2 at a time. As I said, my Amazon password is much shorter, less complicated.

There are no parking meters or paid parking facilities in my town or anywhere within the range that I routinely travel so I gratefully, happily have no experience using parking payment apps.

My suggestion was to let your phone remember it for you, however long or short it is. I have trouble remembering them because of how seldom I use them.

When I sign in on to my bank's website, it verifies me by sending a code to my phone. Maybe they could send a code to my email instead, in case I don't have a mobile phone? I never checked. Even when I'm standing at a teller, they will verify me with a code to my phone. I guess they would accept extra ID (maybe?) if I didn't have my phone with me.

A few of my financial sites (and my mother's to which I have access) require a verification code at *every* access. Others require an initial verification for each new access device but either automatically remember it for subsequent accesses or have an option to remember. There's one that sends the code only via email, which requires computer access since I don't do email on my phone. The others have an option for phone/text or email, or phone/text or phone/voice.

If what you're describing is so-called "Two Step Verifiction", many sites suggest that as an option. But an option that can be declined.

On some sites, there's a choice of being sent a verification OR entering a password. On my phone, when I'm sent a verification, the phone itself moves the "verification"data to the entry line so I don't have to read and transpose the numbers.
