I've always liked the look of floral arrangements around the house that were faux. I guess trends just come and go. Back in the day, it was all the rage.

I am a bit anti faux flowers.

I have about 30+ planters/containers in my backyard (some on patio + some in with river birch trees). I have developed a love for plants/flowers/gardens over the past four years - I used to think I had a "brown thumb," but I've realized that I don't!

My love of plants has spilled into my home - however, not anywhere near the extent as in my yard. I've discovered that it's not that difficult to maintain orchids - so, that's what I use vs. any faux flowers in my home. Also, my SO buys me some fresh flowers fairly often (every couple weeks) for when I can't make arrangements with cuttings from my yard.

I also have a few nice succulent arrangements that add some pretty colors into a few rooms (I have some pretty pink/blue/light aqua/etc. ones that remind me of flowers mixed with different shades of green + a good sized pink variegated string of hearts succulent that is a nice "spiller" over the front side of one of my arrangements).

I do have some different types of dried eucalyptus in a small arrangement on the fireplace mantel in my bedroom.

My main aversion to faux plants/flowers is that they can get dusty.

Other than that, I do appreciate the ones that don't look cheap - like those in the OP. Right now tho, we're living very minimally when it comes to decor. I do miss having a yard where I could cut fresh stuff year round.

As long as they are kept dusted, I'm all for them. I love live plants, but some areas in my house aren't conducive to keeping them alive, so fake/faux it is.

"Back in the day" I used to have several arrangements. Over the years I've "decluttered" most of them. I do have 2 scattered around that I feel are much more real looking and I do enjoy them.

I keep thinking about picking up an faux orchid or 2, to put with my real ones. I have roughtly 10, and at any given time, usually one or two are blooming. I'd like to toss in one or two so there would be more in bloom. Also thinking of getting one near my freestanding tub.

Now, I have reallly toyed with getting a planter or two to have outside, again mixed with real ones. When we stayed at a vrbo recently, they had some on their porch that looked great. I had to touch them because I kept thinking that having to water them would be too high maintenance on a rental. That's how good they looked. Somehow I can't bring myself to push the button so I only have real flowers outside and I am so far diligent about watering.

so to answer your question, I 'm veering towards team faux is ok. in moderation.

I do not have real inside or faux. I do not want to have to dust faux inside. I had them in a previous house and they do get nasty looking if not dusted frequently. I do not have a place for real where they get enough sun. I do have real flowers outside which I take care of. So I guess my answer is I am not against faux I just do not want to deal with the dusting.

I know people who put faux hosta in their "gardens"...yes faux is improved. I had a spider plant that was not near as easy as the claims so after a few tries it's now faux and is as easy as people claimed.

I’m on Dani’s team. I love flowers and growing them. i just can’t do the fake. Each to their own though!

I have purchased realistic orchids in nice containers for past houses. Haven't had any for awhile now. I miss my real orchids in our last house - they just did not like the light here. So I have houseplants again. Several that bloom, included violets and Thanksgiving cactus, so at least there are flowers inside. I also planted containers on our LR/Kit deck, so I can see those during the day as well. I would have more inside if I had more places to put them.

These were all reblooming. I will grow them again.... one day, next house!

Some of the faux succulents sold today are realistic.

I love real flowers —and also great faux from places like NDI. The amaryllis I bought 20 + years ago in a gift shop at the Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island looks as real today as it did then. Well, not exactly the same bc DH accidentally kicked it off the coffee table a few years ago and broke the vase, and our local florist reused rhe stems to make two smaller arrangements. I have four or five NDI arrangements that I bring out individually for a few weeks at a time . And I have a fiddleleaf fig tree from Ballards (the Bunny Williams one) that I didn’t like until I looked at lots of pictures of real ones and pruned the fake one into a more natural shape.

I do buy fresh flowers every other week and I have hydrangeas and gardenias of my own to cut.

Martina I think your arrangements look lovely and Ruby your topiaries are classics.

I gave up on indoor plants when I started having kids. What I have now are gifts and I would be happy to not have them. Outside is another thing all together.

I do like to use faux flowers/plants, and especially in arrangements adding twigs and such for a more natural look.

I used to get mine from a to-the-trade company in Dallas and they still look great, many years later.

My dad has a very cool metal yucca in a pot outside … obviously not meant to look real, but used in a more sculptural, artistic way.

Allison, your orchids were always the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I agree about faux succulents. I have three small ones in a footed pot and everyone thinks they’re real. I stuck them in styrofoam, then added pebbles to cover that.

I have a mix of real and faux in my home. People have touched my faux plants to see if they are real.

I started using faux flowers even outside here in hot Florida weather after watching this video with designer Rebecca Robeson

@eld6161 - I just saw your comment asking for photos - here are some (I have quite a few more!):

This one is just after I went to the nursery - and purchased a bunch of new ornamental cabbage/kale plants - didn't have them in containers yet = it looks very crowded/messy!

The Diplandia haven't grown tall enough yet below - the planter will look much prettier when they stand up taller!

I got several UV rated artificial plants from Amazon several years ago to go around my pool. A few of them, including a very expensive olive tree, turned blue/blue-green in one summer. Just hideous and totally fake looking like I had spray painted them. Out they went.

The 3 boxwood types have lasted in the green color and looked real. Until this summer...I noticed one of them was all splayed out on the top like an animal laid on it. I went to fluff it back up and the entire center "wood-like" trunk and stems have totally degraded into crumbs. It collapsed on itself haha. I tried plopping up the branches and leaves but it's pathetic. IDK what I'm going to do. They are in pots and I cannot water plants every day (I tried) so the fake ones have worked best.

But they are pretty pricey and IDK if I want to pay that again for a few years of pretty. They are in full sun year round so I'm sure if they are mostly shaded they would last longer.

Personally I only like them if they’re blatantly fake, like these felt balls.

I have a bunch of felt flowers in a vase that I use on the dining table in winter. Similar to these. A local shop carries them and I’ve collected a big vaseful over the years.

Beautiful Dani!! I’m having a bit of trouble lately with some of my plants as we’ve been SO hot early in the summer this year. Its a fine line between too little and too much water. Im heading out in a bit to pick up a couple of replacement plants ☹️

Don't we have enough plastic in our lives? That video with the woman who "planted" fake plastic plants in her yard just made me want to scream. We are drowning in plastic--it's a real crisis.

While I’m now liking some fauxs inside, I never considered them outside….except: Admit to using them once during a patio party to hide something?… electrical maybe. But!! Like Diana Bier, I found that ”designer’s” cluttered variety of catastrophic ugliness throughout her yard totally horrific. Over the top critique, I know, but…..

@Tina Marie - Last week was HORRIBLY HOT here. I had to move several planters under my covered patio + pull the patio curtains during the afternoon (I also turned the ceiling fan on high in order to have air circulating - I don't want to get powdery mildew due to the humidity.

The biggest issues has been that June was pretty mild + we had quite a bit of rain - and then BAM! RIDICULOUSLY HOT + high humidity. Typically, there is more gradual transition = the plants/flowers get used to the temperature rising. Not this summer!

I actually watered twice a few days last week = not fun - but I was concerned about some of four of my very large hanging baskets (I can't bring them under the patio cover - they are so long that I can't lay them directly on the patio without risking breakage).

I am not very patient re: letting my planters/hanging baskets slowly fill in - especially when it comes to hanging baskets! I do try to plan my baskets out so that different flowers/plants "shine" at different times. However, I am still a "newbie" and learning - this is only the fourth summer that I've made I made containers/hanging baskets for my porch/patio/yard.

I tend to incorporate many easy to care for varieties as I'm just gaining knowledge. I do try to make 3-4 planters each summer that have more unique flowers/plants that require more specialized care. I have a great family owned nursery that is fairly close to me - they've been very helpful.

FYI - I did make my first "jellyfish" hanging planter this year - I've wanted to make one for awhile. The Dichondra silver falls has grown pretty long and thick (much more than in the photo below):

If I lived in a warmer growing zone, I'd do a succulent jellyfish hanging basket!

While I tend to be anti-fake flowers / plants, I have incorporated some fake succulents on some decorative shelving in the hallway near our master bedroom. It is incredibly dark, but the open shelves needed something so I've placed some sentimental photos, a small number of decorative items from a few trips, and some faux succulents to add a little life and color. Otherwise I have a handful of real plants throughout the house that are in varying conditions. My indoor plant tending skills are a little mixed.

About 13 years ago I had cut some flowers and placed in a large plastic bin to take indoors for making a large arrangement. After getting a vase I went to begin removing them and saw to my horror an incredibly large, giant spider in there. I am Arachnophobic to the max, felt my blood drain from my arms, was barely able to pick up the box and toss it to the side of my yard, barely able to breathe with my heart racing. I have never picked flowers again to bring indoors. It did not help that not long after, I bought my current home, and a spider bite when weeding resulted in my arm seriously swelling up. My love of gardening died back then, but not my love of flowers. At first I bought florist bouquets but after finding some amazingly real looking floral sprays at a garden center back then, I since make my own arrangements with flowers in season. These are not the crappy plastic-y junk from years ago - and maybe still available some places now, the horrid ones people may be remembering, but very, very realistic ones, even to the touch. I bought quite a variety and don't believe any are made of plastic. Even over 10 years ago the individual stems were pricey but to me so worth it. I enjoy creating my own arrangements, and get to enjoy the many perennial flower beds at my daughter's home. She also will not bring them indoors, and this year for the first time has tucked a faux flower or two into her urns of annuals - never ever all faux outside like in the video above. Yikes!!!

I do have several faux topiaries, etc. Those I cannot grow but also live plants I'm not the best with. I love the look of yours, martinca. They look lovely in those beautiful vases.
