Thanks for sharing that experience. It’s an interesting plant that I’m totally unfamiliar with. Someone or something usually loses in a parasitic relationship. However, this is pretty amazing:

“Dwarf mistletoe has a unique seed dispersal system. Its fruit, which are dark purple to brown and similar in size to oak mistletoe, will explode when ripe and project the seed up to 50 feet or more into the air. If it lands on a branch it will stick and germinate when it rains. If you are lucky enough to find some ripe fruits from a mature plant growing low enough that you can hold in your hand, they may start to explode from the change in humidity and heat of your hand, leaving you with a wet and gooey hand.”

Today I was looking through binoculars at a Western Tanager high in the canopy of a much larger Ponderosa, near the little one in my photos, and I noticed the entire tree was completely involved with western dwarf mistletoe. Not surprising that the tree was noticeably unhealthy.

This is the only mistletoe we have here, Viscum album. The berries are white and distributed by birds. They are very sticky and the birds wipe their breaks on the branches to get rid of the gloop.
