Chat obviously does not understand design. The heavy stuff to the bottom but honestly are any of those items worth display ? There is nothing wrong with some empty space in a room. By the looks of the chair you have a need to overdecorate , one pillow on a chair is best BTW. Try leaving that space empty or add a lamp or a plant.

These are the photos. I will agree about there being too much. The one thing on that shelf I would like to keep is the ostrich egg lamp I purchased from an antique dealer in Paris decades ago

A big issue is that that particular shelf unit blocks the recessed light above it and creates a dark corner and weird shadows.

Agree with others. You have plenty of items in the space already so taking away the shelving unit will help. As Diana suggested, using a small end table to place the ostrich egg lamp on is your best bet.

It's great that you're removing the bitty pieces. A few bold choices, large art, a great rug (which you seem to have) and well chosen furnishings are plenty for a room.

For anyone following this thread: Show all FOUR SIDES of an entire space when you post. Good design is never about one element but about the holistic space into which you carefully choose which pieces will be part of a visual tableau.

@Adrianne Moore so nice that you are so positive about making the suggested changes. The ostrich egg is so cute but is lost as a table lamp. Can the cord be pushed inside then use it as decor on the coffee table?

So you asked for advice, and I have some more:

• Looks so much better without the shelves. The table next to the chair is still too small. Can't recommend a size without knowing the size of the room, etc as Jan noted.
• After looking at your sofa, it doesn't look like you have room on the right side of the sofa (as you look at it), but maybe to the left.
• The console doesn't work in the foyer area either, even with less on/under it. I'd limit that area to the mirror or a framed piece.
• That little chair by the stairs is not necessary either--who uses it? Would anyone sit in it to watch TV?
• I'm not loving your multi-colored rug with the neutral palette of the rest of the furnishings and the gray walls. Would you consider a different rug?
• I'd move the stuff on the floor next to the TV. Paring down what's there will make the room feel bigger and airier.

I'd pull the sofa away from the window sill, and the angled chair closer to the seating area.

Maybe the organic shape of a tree is better.

Yes, pull the sofa about a foot away from the window so there's a feeling of flow at that end of the room. Here's a way to have something proportionate under your huge mirror--a floating shelf. Get a raw edge shelf in same wood finish as front door and floor--Etsy is a good source.

A couple things to think about:

--A nicer landing rug for foyer. Choose one that echoes one of the colors of your living room rug.

--Think about repainting the walls when budget and time allow. Because you have a long open space front to back, the dark gray is so cavelike. Honestly, a bright but warm white would bring out the warmth of your floors and leather upholstered pieces. They're kind of lost in the gray.
