Help with LR & DR Vibe: Should I buy this dining table?
I’m updating my dining and living rooms and wondering:
Q1: Will a dark table vibe work with the rest of the house?
Q2: Does an extendable tulip/ Saarinen table exist? Custom?
The proposed table is 50" x 40" without leaf, 72" x 40" extended. It won’t center under the tray ceiling when extended, but can stay round unless I’m entertaining. It’s listed on fb mkt for half the price. table link
You can see from the blue tape photo how close a centered longer table would come to the wall. I’ve looked at so many tables I don’t remember the measurement and won't be there until the fall, but the current table is 60" round and the floor tiles 18". I can squeeze seven around it, so the Drexel table’s single pedestal and lack of legs should seat eight.
Ideally, I’d prefer a tulip table, but none (that I can find) extend; a long table will be too close to the wall, and round too small to seat 8. Added bonus is that the Drexel table’s 40” width gives me more space in front of a sideboard. The current sideboard was the only 14" deep I could find at the time.
Everything in the DR will be replaced.
I’d like to keep the LR sofa, chairs, and chandelier, all else can go. I’m open to replacing the Fine Art chandy, but the silver leaf finish is gorgeous and it was such a splurge.
The living room chair finish is a warm metallic pewter. I could recover them, but I still like the Barbara Barry fabric I’ve had for about 20 years.
Once I finally settle on the kitchen layout, I plan to install white oak flooring throughout the house and replace the kitchen table.

25 days agolast modified: 25 days agoThe living room furniture is very specific, meaning I don’t know how you introduce a modern tulip table in that space.
I like the two tables in your op examples more than what you have in mind today.
I’d like a four leg oval that can expand bigger. We have a vintage Barbara Barry in our small dining room and the rounded ends are easily navigated.
Trying to clean today, but will look for pictured of what I’m talkign about

Correct @chispa—Florida winter home, where we entertain quite a bit. There is a family room behind the arched wall, you can see the kitchen area through the right door. If you somehow missed my kitchen layout saga, never fear, a new post is coming. I can't use the FR for dining since it would be 2 tables back to back—dining and kitchen. I could possibly use the den, but that would put DH in the DR fishbowl, and I love him too much for that.
The dining room is all about entertaining. I host between 8-12 guests for lunch twice a month, plus one or 2 two dinner gatherings. Apps and dessert are on the lanai, dinner inside. But if it's a lovely night/sunset, the full meal will be outside where I can seat 12. If it's a cold or rainy night, I pull the patio table into the FR, add pretty linens, and seat the men there, women at the DR table.
@1929Spanish-GW, I agree the clean lines of the Regency/Federal table with legs would be sleek and stunning, the problem is I can't fit 8 if the table has legs. Hosting 8 is the goal since I can currently only fit 7 at my 60" table, so I have to host either 7 or 10, seat 6 at the round table and 4 at a card (not really but kind of) table. I hate that. A 72" table will not be centered.
The round Baker table is gorgeous. Do you think 45" would look too skimpy in that space? I'd have to keep the table closed so it's centered under the tray ceiling/chandy. It's also $5,100 more than the Drexel, but maybe it's worth it?
Am I missing another seating solution?
@deegw, I love it! What a difference that made! It really softens and updates the look. Maybe a lighter or gold and glass side table?
The opposite wall needs a console. Ceilings are 12'. Here's a pic from me pushing furniture around. The wall is 98", that console is 43h x 62w.
Here are a few consoles, 3 of the 4 are Modern History so there are finish options. And one is $24k lol. Can you guess which one?
I'd love to infuse a bit of contemporary in here and the DR, and use a tulip table in the kitchen if the math of the layout ever makes sense.
24 days agolast modified: 24 days agoSuch pretty rooms. I like the tulip table in the DR. You only need three modern or contemporary items in a room for balance. You already have the art and light fixture in the DR. I like your art choices so far.
The coffee table appears to be large for the space. Round would have been better for flow. Consider replacing or forgo a center table and do two ceramic garden stools, add a large piece of contemporary art over the sofa (find art first). All garden stools do not have a flat top, but this one does, and the soft color appears to be a nice addition.
A round capiz shell table, but this one is only 15" H. I like the shape for interest, material for texture.

@chispa, 24 seated!? That's impressive! I did think about moving the kitchen to the dining room, space, but then the kitchen is the new fishbowl and DH office would be adjacent to the fishbowl. So I thought about making a bedroom the den, and the den the bedroom. Give a mouse a cookie...

I couldn't find the capiz, here is arhaus for a visual, but it's also too low at 15"H. Imagine there are no, or other pillows on the sofa. I can't erase them.

My sister has this round table, below, in the LR of her main house. We actually found it in Florida, but it was too big to use at her house here. It is on wheels, but does not move unless you want it to (on a rug). Weighs 81lbs and is 17.5" H x 42" diameter.
It is carried at various websites, I did not shop for best price. LINK

I like the garden stools with your chairs. You don't necessarily have to match them, depends on your style.I would not do a mirror over the sofa, as it does not reflect anything of interest, and I think either of the art pieces are more interesting.
THESE mirrors come in sets of two, but I only used three here. Not to scale, and a crude attempt at copy/pasting. I would hang touching each other.

ETA: This was a mirror in DD's bath, last house. Larger than the set I saw this morning. When the house was listed, she sold it to a couple that was going to use it as a bar backsplash - perfect measurements.

@mtnrdredux_gw thanks for the question. Sorry to have gone MIA. My DMIL passed away, and it’s been a tough few weeks. The decorating project is a welcome distraction, so thanks again for everyone's help, I really appreciate it.
I don’t really have a defined style, but I do have a style icon—a former colleague whose house in Milan I always loved. It was very contemporary—long, clean lines, understated, a mix of materials, and then a few very old pieces. I couldn’t begin to guess the century of some of them. I remember one chest of drawers with paint literally peeling off, and sculpture and art that had real age to them.
Nothing was matchy-matchy or crowded. Obviously my house and climate are completely different, but I’m really drawn to that mix of clean and collected or inherited pieces that feel almost casually dropped in. I guess this is my very Florida attempt at finding some version of that.
I like this RH tulip table and the clean geometric chairs—they feel like a foil to the squarer bergere, and give a little nod to its French roots. I decided for throw caution to the wind regarding the centering of it. I'll keep it centered and push it out a few inches when I entertain. Centered I think I have about 30" from the wall. That will be my seat lol.
To finish the Dining Room, I need a buffet. I'll get 6 chairs and then decide on the arm chairs. The arms might look good flanking the art wall.
For the Living Room, I’m leaning toward @Allison0704’s round cocktail table, still looking for suggestions for the brown console (that you see between the doors, it's directly across from the sofa), the end table, and whether to center the sofa on the wall rather than the chandelier...
