I need to see the whole bathroom but for me the backsplash is the part I would change and when you do please do not do that ugly trim around it.. Prime well and paint is the prep to paint almost any cabinet not just cherry

Agree with @Patricia Colwell Consulting change the backsplash. Then change the hardware.

Another thought...paint the cabinets the color of the "ugly" trim (not my word) which looks like the same color as the floor on my monitor. Now you are working with brown and beige. Take off the mirror (too motel looking...not that I have been in one). Do wallpaper and get two new mirrors. Hardware is not the greatest. Would rather see a bronze/brass.

You can paint your cherry cabinets. First, you'll want to sand everything so the primer and paint have something to grip. Be sure to wipe away all sawdust with a lint free or microfiber cloth. Add a stain blocking primer like bin shellac. They make one in a water base that's easier to clean up. You'll need to do that to stop color from the sanded cherry finish bleeding through. Then, another very light sand and wipe down. Choose a paint meant specifically for cabinets like SW Emerald Urethane trim enamel. Follow directions for painting, with a very light sand and clean in between coats. BM Advance is a waterborne alkyd that also is a very hard finish when cured. If you're not up for doing it yourself, you can hire a cabinet painter, who will spray the box in place and take the doors off site for painting.

LOL the backsplash and mirror are pretty bad, too. I have the same backsplash tile in my shower, unfortunately (and in both bathrooms). Thanks for your comments so far. Here are photos of the whole room. Floors/shower are travertine, I've no idea what the vanity countertop is!

Thank you katinparadise for the painting tips and everyone for your suggestions. Would you paint the ceiling and walls the same color? Ceiling is white; walls are SW Hyacinth - an offwhite cream.

Kmarek, we rendered the photo you posted and if you change it to white to change the handles this will be the result.

Also paint that window trim to white.

Since the tile in the shower is the same as the backsplash, changing it doesn't make sense, either financially or aesthetically. Just paint the vanity a color that works with the tiles and call it a day. No white--it's too glaring as shown in the photo above. Walls, trim and ceiling all the same color.

No blue gray paint color given the tones of that space; you need something that compliments what is there already.

I would not let that accent tile in the shower drive the bus. Use a simple no pattern tile for that backsplash and then if you want use the colors from the accent tile for accessories or jnust ignore it.. I do agree no stark white for the vanity with your floors .

I’d go a soft off-white color for vanity and change out hardware. Place a border a the mirror and add new lighting that is a little “lighter” visually than the ones you currently have.

This is probably closer to how dark your tile is.

I think painting the vanity off white (or taupe) is the most transformative. Amazing what that and a sconce/hardware upgrade does to the whole look.

I would truly love to retile the backsplash but we're not quite ready to pull out the trim tile that matches the shower. It's all in good condition. :/
