In conditions like that, it's best to water in the early morning, if possible. If you're watering when your temp is still near 100, you're risking crown rot.

TY. Before now we‘d been waiting until the temperature dropped below 90 for that reason but it’s not below 90 until after 10 pm. The forecast does not show this ending for at least the next 10 days.

We water anytime day or night. We have never had a problem with rot on established plants. We do have sandy soil so the soil does not stay waterlogged.

We have clay soil. In a drought and heat, we set up the sprinklers the night before, then turn on 4am the next day. Let them run an hour, then move and run another hour. Everything is through by 6 am.

A toasty 106 yesterday with a forecast of over 100 all next week. As with Nan, I water when I can for the borders and beds. It's just so darned hot, most of the water is taken up almost immediately by the plants with little time to sit around long enough to cause rot. In cooler weather it might be a problem, but for me in the summer it never has been. I'm old enough btw to remember many years of over a hundred degree temperatures stretching on for a week or more at a time. It's just that we gardeners are more aware of it then those who stay indoors.......Maryl
