Watering in Extreme Heat & Drought

We’re in a period of extreme heat and drought, unlike anything we’ve experienced in the last 40 years. My question about watering has to do with the time of day. Is it better to water early in the morning before it heats up? Or, in the late afternoon before sunset?

We’ve been watering in the late afternoon when the temperature has dropped a bit but these days it can still be near 100 around 5:30-6:00, our typical starting time.

FWIW, we have a 2400 sq ft bed and pump water from a lake.

TIA
