This is very off topic but I am curious.

What foods will you not eat ?

I consider myself a rather 'diverse diner' however, there are certain things I will not eat:

--oysters, clams, snail, anything in a shell

--aspic ( egads, who came up with this idea ?!)

--okra ( too slimy)

--any raw fish or meat

--cilantro ( I have that gene !)

--anything wrapped in seaweed

--any animal organs

I will not eat: octopus, lobster, any raw fish, any type of insect, lima beans, oyster stew, creamed salmon and peas ( the last two mentioned were dishes my mother used to serve), liver, frogs legs, veal, snails, hmmm, this list is getting very long! Compared to my likes and dislikes growing up, I consider myself to be a fairly good eater, but when you look at this list, I seem to be a very picky one!

Oh, yes .....add veal and pond critters to my list !

What you call cilantro we call coriander and as with Yoyo, I can't stand it and find the taste quite repulsive. I had never come across it until a few years ago when a friend from Thailand was preparing a traditional Thai dish. I just thought she was adding parsley! As it was a special occasion I had to force it down while everyone else got on with it. It was just me with the problem.

No problem with liver which used to be a very basic meal here (fried with onions) Cheap and cheerful and meant to be very good for you.

    Genetic Influence on Cilantro Taste

The perception of cilantro's flavor is significantly influenced by genetics, particularly through a gene known as OR6A2. This gene affects how individuals perceive certain chemical compounds in cilantro, leading to varying taste experiences.

    How OR6A2 Affects Taste

    • Aldehyde Sensitivity: The OR6A2 gene makes some people more sensitive to aldehydes found in cilantro, which can create a soapy taste.
    • Taste Variation: Depending on genetic makeup, individuals may find cilantro either refreshing or unpleasantly soapy.

I will eat most things, including offal which was a usual meal for a wartime family whose breadwinner worked at a meat market! The menu was basic British and I never had Chinese food until I was taken to an Asian restaurant when I was sixteen.

Now I cannot eat anything spicy, my nearly ninety year old digestion will not allow it! I have to dilute with yoghurt or cream anything with curry or peri-peri I am given to make it palatable.

] want all my meat well done and dislike strong tasting fish. I like almost everything else--except soft eggs.

Adding to my list anything ”cute”, i.e. veal, lamb, rabbit, etc.

Interesting info about cilantro. I like it just fine, but to me ginger tastes like soap. It must have aldehydes, too.

You all have already listed most of the things I won't eat either so it's easier to write the foods on the list that I WILL eat. My love-to-eat includes lobster, clams and oysters (all cooked, not raw). After all, I'm in New England and it would be unpatriotic not to. I also love canteloupe. I can't stand anything creamed. And I have no idea about cilantro one way or another.

I miss the steak and kidney pudding my grandmother made. These kinds of dishes take too long to prepare so no one seems to bother. First, buy a lump of suet to chop finely...

I have to confess to being a very picky eater and will not eat most of what is already listed. However, one item I have not seen is anything with cumin in it!

Everything above - except cilantro - love the stuff.

My sushi needs to be fully-cooked.

I am very particular about processed foods and eat almost none of it.

I make my own bread - regular and sourdough.

I hate lasagna and meatloaf - mostly because my mother would force me to eat both of them when I was young and she was a lousy cook.

Oh, and I don't use ketchup. Ever.

Cumin......a big "no". To me it smells like sweat. (sorry )

    I don't like cumin either.

I can eat practically anything, but there are things I don't cook, like liver and kidneys. I like crumbed brains, but never prepare them at home.

My one big 'no' is chilli - I am extremely sensitive to it and it makes my mouth and tongue throb. People often say 'oh, it's not very hot', but it is to me. I do love curry, and my husband makes up curry powder with all the spices in it except chilli.

I find any type of curry very difficult to deal with. Even the mildest one makes my throat burn. I remember watching my then six year old daughter shovelling down a chicken curry and asking for a second helping, while I could only swallow mine with a large drink of water between mouthfulls to deaden the heat.
