I think it's lovely - just the right size and shape to place on a table or counter. And the fact that it's been hand made by someone local to the Historical Society makes it even better.

petalique, yes it is a lot like a melon basket — just without the intersecting hoop handles and the classic ’god’s eye’ that lashes the two hoops together. I think my sister has that same basket print from the yard sale! lol!

I thought of you when I saw these baskets at the Farnsworth Museum, all Maine made. Aren't they lovely?

They are very pretty baskets! I’ve never been that far north in Maine to know the tribe but I see an unexpected mixture of weaving materials… a bit of pine needles, braided grasses, and I suspect they used black ash for most of the body and especially those tight curls. My personal fave is the basket on the left in the 2nd photo. One of my favorite things about weaving is that I can now look at a basket and know how it’s made. :)

it's an excellent museum too, if you are ever in the area... then topped off our visit with some vintage shopping, a delightful farm to table meal, and 2 mile walk along the breakwater out to the ligthhouse
