The dark ceiling is “moody” speakeasy vibe. The red is regal, palatial. The red ceiling room needs a better rug.

neither and honestly no context with the question. I do not see red only 2 shades of brown.

By painting the ceiling dark you will visually be lowering it. Is that something you want? If you want to visually expand the room will suggest that you paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.

Oh I forgot to mention that the ceilings are wood slats.

If you want more depth and interest, update/layer cushions, a rug if interested.

I wouldn’t suggest installing fake ceiling beams. Beamed ceilings present an issue in Feng Shui terms; and there is really no benefit to installing fake ceiling beams, which create the same problem and are not necessary structural elements. You can look up the Feng Shui of ceiling beams. I am also not sure that beams work with the style direction of the space. If you like the light wood ceiling look - do it without the beams. Although, it doesn’t seem like the “light and airy” look is what you are necessarily going for in this space.

I could not tell that this was wood slats when I initially looked at your pics earlier. So is it a dark walnut versus maybe a mahogany type of stain? I thought the ceiling was painted and no slats. It looked like a dark brown and a deep shade of red on my screen. Now that I know it is wood slats - I think that (what might be) the mahogany type of stain looks very rich.

Thanks for your comment. Ya the Ai app. Kind of made the ceiling look like drywall. The wood slat ceiling now is painted in the wall color. The client wanted to go black at first but I think I convinced him to go a bit lighter to give the chandelier some pop. So he sent me the darker version and I went with the lighter version trying to use the coffee table as a guide on color and tone. In my opinion I’m not to crazy of either version but he has his heart set on going very dark. If it were me I would do a light walnut faux to give the ceilings a tad of character. The new doors are going to be alder which could tie everything together. But what do I know I’m just a painter that’s been only doing this for roughly 45 years. By the way I’m new to this app and this is my first post. So I have a bit of learning to do when posting photos, and explaining myself better. Thanks to all who have posted there thoughts ✌️

I don't have wood on my ceilings, but I have boxed beams and they were stained to complement the wood floors in the house. Of course, they look a bit darker than the floors because they are up on the ceiling, but they still pick up some of the darker brown tones in the floors.

I do have wood ceilings and they are mid tone, so the grain of the wood shows through.

No to faux beams, the space isn't that large and the ceiling fixture won't be a feature with beams. I'd lover it to the bottom being 7' above the floor.

I agree with a more interesting area rug to bring it all together.

Yes, these two examples are both infinitely better than the suggested images. They're less ... clunky. They seem a balanced part of the room rather than a heavy thing hanging over the room.

IMO fake beams always look fake and for sure not in that space at all.For me the same as the walls not in the least dark . This is a starnge sized space to begin with and a dark ceiling accents that odd space .

it's painted now, so it's essentially a color change. that's the good news.

rule of thumb in terms of psychophysical color strategy is the ceiling should be lighter than the floor. e.g. dirt is darker than blue sky.

a darker ceiling 'on top of' a lighter wood floor can feel upside down, off, heavy for some people. it's a choice that needs careful consideration.
