Hi everyone — I'm posting on behalf of Basement Atlas, a site we're developing for sharing basement renovation projects and experiences across countries. For transparency, our initial Danish case studies come from KÆLDER-RENOVERING, a renovation business connected with the site.

One of those projects, in Virum, Denmark, combined floor lowering and underpinning with new sewer pipework, an insulated heated floor, a bathroom, a utility room and direct garden access. It raises an interesting question about what actually makes a renovated basement more useful day to day.

If you've renovated a basement, which change made the biggest difference: extra headroom, daylight and access, the layout, or something else? What would you do differently now?

It would be helpful to include your country, how you use the basement and how long ago the renovation was finished. Comparisons between different types of houses and climates are especially welcome.
