Wall paint, cabinet hardware/handles, and accessories (towels, rugs, curtains, plants, etc. on counter) are so easy and cheap and would have immediate impact. After that, dressing up the mirror (mounting trim around the perimeter), updating the lights and faucets, and painting the cabinets would be very helpful. A blank palette (like you have) is ideal, compared with a bathroom that has obnoxious design elements to overcome!

I would frame out the mirror similar to the below photo. Replace your light fixture - may incur some cost for an electrician if there is only one hookup, and you would like two (one over each sink). Then remove your shower doors and use a tension shower rod with a shower curtain and liner (you said minimal cost). Then some new rugs, and if you really want to splurge, new faucets and countertop!

You can remove the mirror and replace it with two separate mirrors. Home Depot or Lowes have nice ones and affordable.

I have the same type of set up. I framed the mirror in and then painted the frame and the cabinet a dark brown. I also added handles. It looks great.

In the HOUZZ web page go to search and look for "space in between bathroom mirrors" they have a lot of beautiful options.

Maybe you can change the color of the tiles and work with a neutral color instead.

thank you all so much for your ideas. i agree the light fixture has to go! i like the suggestion to frame in the mirror. the photo is great. very helpful! would you all agree to change the shower door instead of using a curtain? or do you think there are other things like faucets and countertops that should be changed first? i know this would incur some cost but my husband is very handy and could do this himself. also suggestions on paint color for the walls and cabinets? thanks again! p.s. for the person who said they "would like to see more of this one" what other pics would you like to see? closeups?

I would change the shower door to a frameless glass one, not a shower curtain, there is no bathtub.

I wouldn't prioritize the shower door area. While it isn't currently a nice design FEATURE, it isn't an eyesore. And I would be reluctant to replace a full height door with a curtain since leakage is unacceptable. That said, placing an attractive shower curtain OVER the shower door could be a good compromise; you'd maintain the door's functionality but improve the aesthetics. As to paint color, it looks like you can pick whatever you want, as long as your lighting is good; you're not constrained by earth tones, pastels, etc. because of existing features. I have seen attractive cabinets painted sage, yellow, beige, or even gray. Martha Stewart or Pottery Barn styles. I'd start there, and then figure out a complementary wall color.

In order of priority/"bang for your buck"
1) Paint the walls
2) Light fixture
3) Add hardware to cabinets- cheap and makes a big impact
4) Add a mirror frame - this is cheep ~$30 if your husband can build the frame (tons of tutorials online), use existing mirror, they are hard to get off the wall usually glued and damages the wall, plus the cost of a new mirror
6) A few decor pieces on the counter (lotion pump, candle, vase)
7) I don't see any towel racks, from a functionality standpoint you'll want a rack and some hooks. Use the rack for some decorative towels and a hand towel, put hooks behind the door for your wet towels.
8) Replace counter, you can find cheap granite at Menards as long as its standard size.
9) Down the road you can change out the shower door, but this is expensive and if the old one works keep it.

your suggestions have been great. thanks for the priority list. it helps a lot. I like the idea of painting the cabinets - an idea I had not thought of before. had thought of painting the walls but not the cabinets but it would really change the look. also I appreciate the lead on granite. I will check it out. thanks soo much to all who have responded! I truly appreciate it and will post pictures when we are done.

Replace the faucets, vanity top, shower door and of course the light fixture.

In order of positive impact, I'd rate them
1. Shower door - use a frameless door (no metal cross-pieces that you walk under).
2. light fixture
3. faucets
4. vanity top

The rest of your room is quite nice and neutral. Select a style and stick with it.
