Hi kfleiss- I'm always interested in how homeowners use Houzz especially when it comes to hiring a designer. May I ask a couple of questions?
How did you find the firm you are considering? Did you use Pro section on Houzz in your search?
I agree with Liza Jane that your relationship with your designer is the most important thing. That encompasses many things, least of which is communication and the ability to exchange and grasp concepts and styles. Designers who excel in these skills may potentially get your project done more efficiently: and potentially bill less hours. So, rate can be relative.
To answer your question, the firm's rate is well within the expected norm.

Thank you for all the feedback. This is very helpful and definitely makes sense. I actually found this one designer in particular through a friend, which I assume is likely the way most are found. I am completely green to houzz.com, was just told of it yesterday so I haven't used pro section, but think I might give it a try as I am still considering all options.
