It is large, but needs a different light above, and a beautiful rug under it... along with some textiles on it.

All the things Sustainable said but on a smaller table. I would get claustrophobic eating in there.

Thanks ladies. A lot. I sometimes need to add chairs. We love hosting. I totally wanted a rug but thought it might make it even smaller.

I think it looks fine if there is no door. But judging from the position of the lighting and the door, I believe the designated breakfast area is meant to be smaller and the larger table is encroaching into the walkway from the door.

No, it is large for this kitchen, we can use more space from this kitchen until we have a more comfortable space and we can have more bright colors in it,too, because this kitchen is dark with its dark colors and its low light.

seating for eight is perfect ,especially I you don't have a dining room , if you had an extendable table instead of a solid one perhaps it would have been better to make it shorter when company isn't there . Yes the light fixture needs to be replaced regardless of the table size ,it looks to small and too high.




No rug required , keep it easy to clean up spills and bread crumbs.

add a large round light fixture above the table and skip the rug. the rug would be too much for this room and not very practical.

I'd go for a table with eaves then you can have a smaller table most of the time and the ability to extend it when needed.

A glass tabletop would give you the look of more space but they are very modern in style, attract dust, date in style quickly and generally only come in set sizes. No possibility of adding eaves and place settings.

If the table is staying I would lighten the wall color. I also think two curtain panels on the big window and a roman shade in the smaller one would help define the space. I would also clear the place mats and install a new light fixture that has clear glass.

It's a little long and dark. Can you return.? Or is there a extension in it? Windows need to be done would help in look of room. Light is to small for area also. Fabric chairs would break up so much dark wood. Please don't buy matching sets. There is no law that you have to buy chairs to match. I never do. Is this your main eating area?

The table doesn't seem too big for the space at all. A large area rug would cover the white tiles and add some warmth to the room.

The room is a little narrow but where are guests supposed to sit? You're on the right track.

You have been fighting this for a year. Keep table add fabric bigger chairs like wing back to ends of table. In a print. Just 2 chairs on each side. Store extra chairs until needed. Add new light. Window covers as I stated before. No rug mot needed. You could paint a lighter color?

Maybe you can store the two end chairs and put them at the table when you need them. :).

It is large for the space because it appears you are blocking the doorway. Could you remove the chairs at both ends and slide the table close to the window, leaving seating for 6 for everyday use and when you entertain slide it back to this position. Also, I would remove the placemats and replace with a runner down the length. It is a nice set but an adjustable table would make both you and husband happy.

The best thing you can do here is build a corner banquette (bench seats) and get a round table with expansion leaves for company. The benches can be made for storage and are not that hard to do. We built our own in our last home and they were great.

I agree, the banquette would be the best use of this space but it may be too informal for your taste and entertaining needs

It looks like you do have an expansion leaf in the table in your photos. If you were to build banquette benches, maybe you could incorporate leaf storage under the bench and find a way to use this beautiful table without it seeming too large for the space?
One thing though - with the benches, you would need to get rid of the window sill overhangs :(
I only had one window to work with and did not anticipate this issue!
Personally, I don't have issues with large furniture in small spaces, as long as the traffic flow works and the use of color and light is used to the best advantage.

One thing you can do inexpensively to give the space a different feel is to add drapery rods at the top of the walls ( almost to the ceiling) all the way from the counter (photo left) around the space to the right side of the door where that wall ends. Make floor length drapery panels that you can slide around to change the look. They can be pulled in front of the door to hide it; into the corner to soften the harsh corner line....If you have a lot of panels - the options are endless.

LIte fixture needs to be replaced with something substantial. I would remove 4 of the chairs and bring them out when company comes. Move them to another part of the house. Your hubby is right. Far too much furniture for such a small space.

I would consider removing the end chairs and have seating only on the sides for 6; add the other two chairs when needed; perhaps push the table slightly toward the back wall when the back chair is not there. I would play with these options. Others have mentioned similar ideas. Eight chairs actually help to make the space look crowded. Fewer chairs would help. Put a couple in the living area or wherever they look attractive. A bench (with a back on it) on one side might be an interesting option - and great for an expanding crowd. Recovering the cushions with a fabric with some flair might completely change the look of the set. I have a black dining set that I recovered with Robert Allen's Levittown pattern in the color Night Sky (black and cream geometric). Awesome!

Can you please share the manufacturer if the table and the size if the area it is placed in? I am looking to seat 8 for entertaining and 6 normally and really enjoy your table style. I am concerned about my breakfast room size and it looks like it could be very similar to yours in my new build. Thank you.
