Try built ins that would match the hard wood floor

And add curtains to hide the blinds

Add a few paintings and a nice wall color to lighten the room

Use two large area rugs (identical) to avoid having a bowling alley effect. Have several seating areas to break up the long room.

Hi Louise. I've sketched out a few thoughts below. As it's a wide-angle shot I'm assuming the room isn't quite as long as it looks. I think you could easily use a sectional sofa if you wanted one, but as I'm not crazy about them I've marked in positions for two couches, coffee table, rug and side table. Curtains are essential for a cosy feeling, and they should be fuller than they look on this sketch -- enough to close comfortably on chilly evenings. You could treat the fireplace wall somewhat as I've suggested, and I think the wall on the left near to the entrance would be a good place for a gallery of family pictures (this being a family room, and all). Not in the sketch, on the right as you enter, I think a small table/desk and chair area with perhaps a bookshelf would fill in the area attractively and functionally. I hope this is useful.

PS If you did this, a table behind the sofa facing the entrance would be a good idea.
