My step-son's room with all his sports collectibles.

This room is personalized for my step-son, who lives for sports! Here we decided to display all his sports memorabilia. All the furniture is refurbished. We added a sliding door so he would have access to the deck. Let me know what you think?

I am sure he loves it! Only thing I can think to suggest is a different window treatment. Something younger and hipper...vertical blinds maybe?

Agreed, the window treatment could be more 'masculine', but overall a great room.

Looks great! Agree about the curtains. Maybe just let them hang down straight.

Riffing off the red leather bench and chair, think he needs a couple red bean bags for lounging when friends come over.

Although it's nice to have to view straight out to the outside from the hall door, I remember what it was like to be a teenager and if I had to struggle to make a bed pushed up against the wall like that everyday, it would NEVER get made, so I'd suggest putting the bed back where it was. I know, you'll have to re-arrange some of the framed items :-(. And you definitely need to do something with the curtains... Think the issue is that your rod is actually too short. There's a bit of space left on each side before you run into the artwork so if you can pull the rod apart a bit more, do it the maximum amount. Next, take the curtains off the rod and buy curtain rings with the little clips on them. Hang the curtains using the rings; that way they will slide easily on the rods and can be shoved back cleanly to each outer edge when open. Unless your stepson is a fashion maven, don't use the tie backs on the curtains. If the curtains are now dragging on the floor, take the curtains off, fold the rod pocket to the back and firmly iron it down then put the clips back on, pinching the fold line; they'll hold the pocket folded down on the back side out of sight. Let me look at the pictures again and I'll have more comments. You're off to a good start...

Sorry..."submit" button jumped in front of my finger... As I was saying.... the room is a bit spartan; unless this space is doubling as a guest room for people your (our) age who only spend one night at a time, then you need to add some comfort factor to make it more welcoming. It needs to say "Hey! Stay a while..." Not, "don't mess me up!"
Except for the bed, there's no where anyone would want to sit for more than about 15 minutes. If you decide to leave the bed where it, consider getting rid of the red leather bench. It's nice cuz it's leather and offers storage but it's really better in a dressier (older person's) room and moving it elsewhere in the home will give you enough room to add a comfortable upholstered chair next to the desk at the end of the bed. Get one in a dark or red geometric print. I recommend either an inexpensive one no one will care about if you have to toss it in a couple years or pay more and get microfiber or a Sunbrella fabric that can be cleaned with bleach if necessary. No young person wants to worry about getting in trouble for eating on upholstered furniture. Add an upholstered round stool or poof (you can probably find one at Home Goods, Target, TJMax, etc that will be "cool" and won't cost too much). Can be used as an ottoman for the upholstered chair or as extra seating for friends. Also, move out the side chair which, in a bedroom, is only good for sitting on while you tie your shoes. If there's not room for an upholstered chair as the room is set up now, boys will have to lean back on the bed using the red leather bench...not very comfortable so seriously think about relocating the storage bench.
Some minor thoughts: Replace the roll pillows with a 16"sq (at least) pillow with a geometric or stripped fabric that includes the manly colors already in the room. Also, although I hate the look of them, the previously suggested bean bag might be a good idea, depending on the age of your stepson. You could always get one recovered if you can't find one in a decent color. You might also ask your stepson if he'd like to swap out the side chair at the desk for a real office chair... They are so much more comfortable and he might like the more industrial look.
This room is very attractive as it is but it looks like a seldom used guest room...not a bedroom dedicated to a kid who just needs some space to relax in and get used to the new living arrangements [sorry...making lots of assumptions about how often he uses this room and what your budget might be. All just IMO, of course].

Now that we are talking furniture arranging I looked back at the room.

I would either get a bed that had a headboard with an attached shelf (to act as nightstand), or I would put the current night stand into the corner and have the bed where it was in the before shot, or at least swapping positions with the night stand. It is hard to make a bed that is against the wall!

Then I would swap the dresser and desk's positions. I think there is a natural "protect your back" feeling that most people have. Right now, sitting at the desk gives one that feel, since person sitting at desk has his back to the entry door.

If you keep the current desk (I'd like a longer one that seems more substantial), add a printer stand or bookcase next to it on the door side (to hide view of wires).

Office Depot carries some nice more modern and comfortable desk chairs.

Sorry to be picky, you have done a very good job! Here is a picture of a bed with built in storage and lighting:

Your new room looks terrific! You did a great job updating it. It could also be fun to add a red accent wall at the head of his bed. You could find a color that matches the red bench at the foot of the bed. It might give the room a little extra pop.

    Congrats on your new space!

Thank you everyone for the wonderful advise. This room is the "catch all" for furniture that had no home:)
The room was fully renovated meaning new lighting, new floors, new baseboards, trim and the replacement of the window with a sliding door onto the deck.
my stepson and I arranged it together with what we had and tried to incorporate as much of the "sports" as possible.
My stepson goes to school in Vancouver so his room has turned into the "guest room" and where my husband works when he works from home.
We are planning to redecorate this room properly in the next year or so.
I am very grateful for all the suggestions.
Resource Art & Design, thank you for taking the time to go into so much detail and suggestions.
I am also thinking of making this room into my 16 year old son's room since he spends more time at home than the rest of the children as well as the fact that this room is bigger than the one he currently has.
I will share with the community the results once we take on the task of decorating this room and getting rid of most of the furniture.
    Please continue with the suggestions.
Thank you so much for your help.

I actually liked the old desk set-up you had -- it could have been painted black, and his sports memorabilia that is on his dresser top could have been placed on the shelving above the desktop. I also liked the old bed placement, but your new setup does look better with the sliding glass doors in the room. The new glass doors are beautiful, and I love the red and black accents with the white walls (I like the red ottoman with the current bed placement). Also love the new espresso colored furniture, although I loved your old furniture as well (just not for a boy's room). And the new flooring is AWESOME. If anything, I'd add book shelves above the desk area (like the ones in pcmom's Pacific Palisades photo) and put a nice lamp on the table by the bed, and a red pillow on the bed to compliment the red ottoman.

The desk set-up actually does not look bad in the picture... different story up close :) It was built in and we had to make a closet on the other side of the wall due to removing the existing closet in what is now the open concept kitchen/dinning area. We took about 3 feet from the room. The built in shelf and desk has to be removed and there was no way to save them... believe me, they were not very nice. The dark "panel" you see above the bed is actually built in storage that I had custom made to utilize the empty space... so on the other side of the wall is now a hallway closet . Still so much to do :)

You can make old sports jerseys into pillows.. One side has name and uniform number..the pillow closes with white thick shoe lace look...was he on any red teams? Maybe replace artwork with framed poster or shadow box memorabilia, duvet needs more colour and puffiness...Nautical has great grown up navy stripes with taupe. Hope he appreciates all your efforts!

Sorry..now I get the before.,.you actually did the posters in the after!

I think it's pretty nice but would get rid of the sunflower and tree print...they do not seem to go. Abstract art would be something that doesn't conflict with the sports memorabilia.

It's very nice but it needs color and I was thinking red too!
