Hi, The fireplace unit is designed to have the finish material installed over the unit's mounting flange giving a recessed appearance. The drywall edge is finished off with a "J" molding which gets mudded and painted over and gives a very clean finished edge. The fireplace unit is from Montigo and you can see the installation instructions on their website http://www.montigo.com/. The same effect can be used with any non combustible material such as ledge stone, stone slab, or tile. It's a great product!
