I agree. Faux shutters always look at odds with a facade.

Take down the shutters, the link below may help. Move your downspouts to the corners of the house, and cut down the plant in front of the front door and replace old hedges with low annuals. A slightly darker fabric in the windows would showcase your pretty muntins. Great brick and arches. I'm sorry I went off on a tangent but it's a nice home and could really be a stand out. Have fun with the front door color!

Some ideas for putting the shutters to better use:

HI -- I think the upper window surrounds should be painted a charcoal or an off black . Remove the shutters for sure on the lower windows and paint the windows the same charcoal and also the surround of the entrance and then a rich red or green or your choice color on the front doors if you don't want the blue anymore . Remove all the foundation plants and the island that is in front of the entrance . Have a walkway in a stone or brick from the front door with low growing side plants . Bring low plantings out further from the foundation,... because the windows come down so low I don't think plants should hide that feature.

I like the lower shutters. When you remove the upper shutters, you will have a smooth blank flat area around the windows. You could have moulding and trim installed to give interest and dimension to these surfaces.

Thank you for posting and for everyone's ideas. This is almost identical to my house even the bushes. Some differences. I was thinking about putting shutters but I'm glad I read this. How's it going since your post was nearly 2 years ago.

We removed lower shutters and replaced the plants. For our next round of work, I think we'll remove the upper shutters and work on a new trim around the upper windows. How about yours?
