I'm redoing the kitchen in my mom's 42-year-old home. I gutted it, but basically I'm just putting new floors, appliances and cabinetry where everything was before; redid walls and ceiling also. ONE of my issues is with the "island," which is too small now that I see it with the base cabinets installed. Right now it's only 60" by 24". I still have to install the countertop, so how can I enlarge it without tearing out the cabinets that have already been installed? I saw pics on this site where legs were added to an island to give it added width (or length)? Would that work in my case, and if so, besides adding legs what else would be needed? How much overhang is generally allowed on a countertop without support? Thanks in advance!
