I've never bought a wash for wood, is it a protectant or a paint?

The wash is an acrylic based paint.

YOU STILL HAVEN'T TOLD US THE COLOR OF THE PAINT USED ON THE WALLS. Very important info in achieving this look. Do you know or can you find out? Also, how do you make the wash? Was it by diluting the paint with water or some other solution? Also are the pine and cedar planks purchased with a smooth or rough finish?

Rubio Monocoat would also be a neat finish over this wood. Here are some shots of the Rubio White over White Oak. Its a little lighter. You could also check out Milkpaint as another possible finish.

What if I wanted to achieve more of a driftwood color? Any ideas?

Sure! Check out the Rubio USA website. They have several dozen colors that you can choose from. 4 or 5 of them meet that need.
