If you move your mouse over your discussion comment (commented within 1 week), you will see a pencil icon and a delete icon in the upper-right corner. It is them who took space from your comment.

However, if this bugs you, we will improve this. Stay tuned :)

It bugged me only because I saw no rationality to it. Thanks for providing that. :-)

I will say that if it's done intentionally (to make our editable comments obviously editable to us,) it's not obvious enough. I don't actually see a need to highlight our editable comments to us over those that can't be. The little pen and cross icons do that well enough I think. If you're going to do it, I'd say make it more obvious (color, typeface, background.) But for my part, I say just make them all the same and let the hover icons do their job.
