Could I ask, what is wrong with this room please?

This room is a dual dining room & family room. The table which is not in the photo is fine, but there appears to be something not quite right. The sofa is relatively new.

For me there's a lot of white, between the couch and the wall colors. (I love the way that wood looks -- sculptural and warm-toned!). Maybe get some color on the couch with decorative pillows? I agree with Solincia about the rug placement. That little one by the pretty fireplace is getting lost and takes the focus off to the side.

Thank you. I have attached 2 other photos.

I feel that there is lot of white but thats perfectly fine. It's just not getting rich touch. I would love to give 1 idea:

Remove that mirror and print 1 awesome wall sticker for the same whole wall. Put that sticker over there something like attached image.

Maybe stacking the wood elsewhere (garage?) and keeping a small basket of the wood next to the fireplace on the other side would free up a bit of much needed space. YOu could put shelving, nice art ... add a bit of color to the space.

Really like the touch of green that you've added ... some green pillows on the couch would look nice.

Thank you. The rug in front of the fireplace is practical and also to "hide" a concrete bit around the hearth of the fire.

Mu suggestion is to paint the fireplace wall black…in a matte finish. I think it would make that great spot more important.

I like banner’s idea of the decal, but I would put it on the mirror itself.

    Hi---great job with the room!

Could we see a couple of more photos? One of the whole room if you can and one taken standing at the fireplace. Is that a window seat by the dining room set?

    Love the wood stacked there!

I feel that the room is a little cold and lacks a focal point and the table is very large compared to the couch seating space. So, what I would do is

-buy one large area rug for the whole room
-is there a way to move the table 90 degrees, so that a chair could be added to the couch area?
-Consider a larger mirror or art over the fireplace (taller). Would the one over the couch work?
-I would not use the heart (too cutesy for the rest of the room).

I love what you did so far. I agree that you need to add an area rug. I would add accent pillows on the couch. Consider an oversized ottoman in front of the fireplace, to make it more inviting. Pattern and texture add visual interest to white spaces, so consider that when adding any additional piece to the space. I love the cow prints. Take your cue from them to accent colours in small dose, perhaps a table runner or pillows on the couch. Adding decor elements slowly and gradually will ensure that you remain true to the less is more approach.

I had the same thought as iamjudy about painting the fp wall charcoal or black, but wasn't sure how far it extended.

I can't tell if there's enough room, but could you move the table and chairs to where the sofa is, and put the sofa where the table is? I'm thinking that you could then add a small chair to the left of the fireplace.

Add a tiled threshold to the fireplace.

Thank you. I have moved the mirror over the fire, however it feels too tall. I have also over time had swapover of sofa and table. I particular like rustic décor.

Are you happy with this being a family room with just 2 seating spots in the "family room"?

You have a larger table (beautiful, by the way) with 6 chairs, but only 2 seats for family room. Is this working for you?

I think a sofa table behind the sofa will break up the 'white on white' on that wall. It will also provide a surface for a nice lamp etc. An area rug - as already suggested - would also anchor the sofa with the fireplace. Right now... it appears that all the items just floating by themselves instead of being 'related'. [I sort of like the wood stack... as long as it doesn't have any bugs in the pile]

Right....I want to know how that wood looks so clean and there are no scuff marks on the white wall!!!
Thank you. It is really our dining room, however I feel it is too big a space for the table, sideboard etc., as we have to walk through the room into the kitchen. When the table is placed in the centre of the room, it really looks lovely, but it becomes an obstacle course as the "path" is blocked through to the kitchen. The sofa is there for our 2 kids to enjoy TV, which is hidden behind a white fretwork beside the smaller window.

Ok, the wood is clean and has no bugs. This was only done a few days ago. I purchased the wood and cut to size. It cost USD71 and I am planning on continuing with the height, but not quite to the top. We haven't used the wood for the fire yet, but are planning to but also building it up again.

I like the idea of a really slimline table behind the couch for a couple of lamps. The couch really looks lonely and out of place now.

I actually think that your smaller square mirror, without the heart wreath, looked better over the F/P. Perhaps you can add to the frame to make it more substantial. Can you give us an idea of your floor plan- how the table and chairs relate to the fireplace. Where is that tv the kids watch? Your stacked wood is gorgeous and I would not move it out. It is quite a feature of the room. I agree that a slim sofa/console table behind you couch with appropriate lamps would be nice. I would also be curious to see the table turned coming out from that wall, unless that is the direction you walk around it to the kitchen. there is always something to have to work around. I love the simplicity of your room and I do not mean to have you clutter it up, but it could use some "layering" to make it cozier, if that is truly what you want. I suggest your accent color of the lime green, from your cow prints, be used sparingly about the room to add a bit of color, either on the table settings or simple design toss pillows for the couch, perhaps with your wood colors (from the logs). A large rug for the couch area would be nice, but keep it simple in color and design or you risk losing the simple clean look you desire.

Thank you. I really would love to make it cozier and warmer looking and I thought that by adding the warmth of the logs, this would have done it and although the logs look great, the room still feels cold. I would prefer not to repaint. The tv cover was made so when proper entertaining is done, we don't see the tv on the wall.

If I had to choose an ideal mirror for over the fireplace, it would be tall like the one with muntins, but with no muntins, like the smaller one.

I like many comments about adding a dash of colour- quite rightly from the hues of greens pink, browns in the artwork. The rooms needs to be toned- it is a little hard on the eye right now. Consider stitching a green or light brown stripe down the centre of the dining chairs - something smart with a good stitch...- change the colour of the candles in the candle stand to an olive green. Maybe push the table against the wall if you need the circulation space, and bring the two chairs to the tail of the table if the table is wide enough to accommodate this. Also if you can put up artwork that has some rhythm with the cows- as of now the mirrors don't blend into the rest of the room. If you are looking for a warm, clean, playful feel also try to pull in some mood lighting. Maybe a floor lamp with a coloured shade that matches the carpets and art and perhaps contrasts with the sofas accent pillows.

I vastly prefer the smaller mirror over the fireplace. The larger mirror is dominating the fireplace, which is so pretty. How about a plant in that window well? You'd get green from the plant and then color from whatever pot you use.

Thank you. I agree re the mirror and I thought I might repaint the white room, as I think that might just be part of the problem. I thought of a neutral light colour. I will also get a large rug for under the sofa taking it right across and beyond the fireplace.

Paint: I would recommend the greige color on the cows.

Rug: should be centered in the room

Small MIrror above fp: way too small
