Need opinions

We have a very large "gathering room" (18x20), with raised hearth fireplace that is open to the kitchen. We will have a built-in reading nook next to the fireplace. I would like to have two 36" square tables that open up to 64" when needed instead of one large table. Most of the time we will only need one of them but when we have company, we could extend and join them to accommodate 8-10. I was thinking of an 8x10 rug for each table. Would love to hear other opinions. I did find a few pictures with two tables.

Thank you for your input concerning rug. Have had a hard time finding large enough area rug...without spending a fortune!

I think I'd rather have two useful spaces instead of two tables and only use one most of the time. You can purchase a dining table that has two or three leafs to seat more when needed. You can have chairs in your sitting area that can be used as dining chairs as well.

Darzy, the room is so large, with cathedral ceilings, which adds to the volume. My idea was to attempt making the room cozier by creating small spaces. Am sure this goes against all design principals but I saw it with a large dining table and it felt very cold to me. (Hard to explain). I am going to introduce some color...it is all white right now, with dark stained ceiling beams and dark woodwork.

I'm afraid having two tables would sort of have the effect of a small restaurant.
I agree with Darzy. Two upholstered chairs would add softness to the room as a sitting area, and then be beautiful used at either end of the table when extended. You'd just have to be sure they were the right height and fit for the table. Just think, how it could 'fancy up' your table for holidays!

bobbiem..I was thinking two accent chairs or the sofa (with the backs to the dining table) separating the two spaces. Then, your dining table for six. When you need to seat more at the dining table, you move the accent chairs as the head chairs for your dining table. So, you have two cozy spaces.

Wish I could post a picture of the room but right now it is full of tools and paint cans! In addition to this huge room, we have an adjoining huge living room so really don't need more seating areas. The reading nook in gathering room is actually going to be a built in daybed so will probably add a couple of chairs at that end of room.

ok. If your tables will mostly be 36" square most of the time, I think you can get away with 5 x 8 rug under each table.

The suggestion of one larger rug to unify the space is a good one; less of a scattered disjointed feel. Your concern about an affordable larger one is a valid one. I sometimes get a good quality remnant and have it seamed. Great effect, lower cost. It will also help with acoustics in this large hard surfaced room. Great space; best wishes.

Rug should be large enough so when you pull the chairs out they should still be on the rug
