Buy much longer 3 ft in a bronze, google. Picture over firepl way too small go tall 5 ft and 24" wide. In bold colors. That will help look.

Fill opening by firepl with wood. Add area rug very big. In color.

You should remove the sconces and repair the drywall. That won't be expensive at all. I like the sconces and they'd probably look great elsewhere....like in a hall or in a dining room. They're just not needed where they are.

RH has a great one that may work there.

Mrsrossotti, I like the idea of a hanging lantern too. I saw a pic somewhere that now I can't find. I also can't find somewhere that sells a nice big lantern hook - they all seem too dinky for the scale of the wall - any suggestions?

Amycali, I love that pulley one! Do you think it's ok to have that so high or is it meant as a reading light?

It would have to be reworked for hardwire install but that is done all the time and is fairly easy. Based on the sheer size I believe it will work. It would be like a beautiful sculpture up there. I wouldn't count on it for too much as useful task light but it will def make a statement. Most of these from RH could work too....

Oh you put TV over FP. Like new walls. Furn looks good. So far none of the sconces shown are good. Keep looking or remove a and patch, now that you are painting.

I saw on houzz somewhere a photo of a two story room with lanterns hung about this height but I can not find the photo now.

Unless you are really attached to the sconces my other suggestions would mimic another post, take them down and patch the drywall. You could also add a feature to that area above the fireplace, i.e. rustic wood in a herringbone pattern, stone, anything that fits your style, really. You could even just paint it a different color than the rest of the room (CHEAP!) Playing up that large space would bring the eyes up and maybe the sconces would not seem so awkwardly high. Also, a large piece of art would help that as well. If this were my house this is what I would do. Make that space above the fireplace a feature wall in some way, put a large, tall piece of art there, or a series hung vertically, and use that light source not as a sconce, per se, but as a source to properly light the artwork. I would choose the artwork first and build the room around that.

The concept of having something long was good, they just went too trendy with the fixture. These are wired here for scale to the entire room, planned for a wall torchiere.

When you consider length, you might hang butcher paper from your railing at the approx. height to see how long would scale well. The lighting fixtures need to be vertical not sticking out horizontally. You could try some outdoor lighting like these (Lampsplus) that come with a sturdy hook and add a chain to the height you want.

Or something really simple like this from Lampsplus. They're 46" tall. The chrome ties in with your trunk coffee table.

Another option. If the pictures are too small you can replace them with some coloured squares or some wallpaper to make it a custom fixture. Also from Lampsplus.

Just a side note.......if you decide to remove the sconces you can't just patch over the holes because the wires are live. Make sure you ask how to do it properly to prevent any fire hazards.

Jessica, I love those mogador lanterns. Have you tried to ask the designer directly in the questions feature of Houzz. I see she responded to one regarding the lantern itself perhaps she knows the info on the hooks??

I like the lantern idea because although trendy it's not expensive so I wouldn't mind if I change it in a few years. I also like that classic sconce and wouldn't spending more because I'll keep it. Great ideas I'll have to think these over!
