purple, yellow and ?

so my living room is newly renovated.
I used a lot of purple and some yellow. but since my floor is dark I still need some color to make it brighter yet not tacky.

What do you recommend for curtains? I am thinking off-white
what should the third color be in addition to yellow and purple ?
what piece of furniture can I add ?

I would not add another color. As for curtains, white lined linen.

If you must add color, go with a light grey. The rug should be under the front legs of the chaise on the sectional. Not liking anything in the corner. The chair and table are too big, and the lamp is very traditional. The cabinet next to the chair needs to go as well. I would go with a contemporary chair and otto, with a reading light. Frame on the art work needs to be changed as well. Not so sure you need the rug in the reading area, it catches the eye and looks like a tripping hazard. Good luck!

I like the idea of off white for curtains and no other color added to the room. Is there a way to bring that yellow chair over to the sectional with the floor lamp? That MIGHT mean the coffee table has to go, but the chaise will still fill in that floor area there.

Maybe try the art that is over the couch over on the wall where the yellow chair is now and find a larger piece for the couch and then hang it lower........OR........just lower this one to 6 inches over the couch.

And, yes, pull the rug under the front feet of the sectional. LOVE your bravery with color in this room!!!!

the rug in the corner is annoying me too but I bought not long ago and don't want to give it away so soon!
I agree the yellow chair is too big. It is 7 years old so about time to replace it with something more modern.
The chaise can go each side of the sectional so I am thinking of moving it to the left and bringing the yellow chair to the right of the sectional next to balcony's door.

YES........try moving the chair there and post another pic, pretty please! Love how the chair and the lamp shade work together and a lamp would be needed over there, too.

Do you have another chair you could put over on that other rug? Lower the art there, too. Maybe turn the rug? Guessing it will not fit by the door????

What would the art over the table look like over the couch????????? Could you just put it on the back of the couch for a sec?
I like the idea of moving the art piece to the corner and getting something bigger above the couch. I don't have another chair but I contemplating getting beige and yellow chair and put it near the purple couch not in the corner
  • 12 years ago
so Darzy do you think I need a warmer lime for my bright purple?
Abby the art over the table is a wall decal I can't move it. :(

Do you USE all the chairs at the table daily? Could two matching ones go over in the corner on the purple rug???

I'm in love with this room!!! Great design and color sense. Love the colors too! Your pillow choices are terrific!
Some tweaking that repeats much of what was said above.
For window drapes, I really like these for your room. I think I'd like a bit of pattern to add that small touch of interest. Love that it is a pattern that will stand on it's own and contrast to the painted walls and is great with everything else in the room.

The lime in my photo is too subdued. I'm thinking a brighter lime. :) Or maybe more apple green. A green that looks great next to your purple sofa.. The room below is a good example of the purple, apple green and blue combo.

Maybe a chair that is close to the wall color. If you introduce another color, I think you will be complicating the elegance and sophistication that you have going on now.

First think wall color is a must. The limey ideas are definitely a worthwhile direction- it could be very subdued and go on the ceiling as well. Overall very positive reaction to the room. Maybe some crown molding would be good as well. Agree with comment above that chair echo wall color- different shade. Lighting is very critical and right now doesn't appear to be developed.

What about a lighter rug that is less busy to make the room seem lighter?
Also agree with Marc Russel interiors and the need to replace the busy rug. Not an attractive pattern.
    here some more pics
I moved the rugs but won't be throwing out the busy rug I like it too much :)

1- I will move the art to above the corner and get a bigger one above the couch
2- I will get a yellow and white chair (or gray chair with a purple pillow) and put it near the curtains
3- anything I can do to move furniture around?
4- throw the old yellow chair and decide what to replace it with

    thanks everyone

Love what you are doing and i love purple! However to my eye, your gorgeous wood table is so warm and the cool rug is just pulling away from it. If you did another rug i think the room could be much nicer and fully bring out all your elements you like so much. That is just my opinion. Best of luck!

so what color do you recommend for the rug? can you share a photo please?

Love the purple....but with gray, black white it is reading as a very cold room...I would like to see you replace the gray with a brown/gray color, not an average taupe, but a richer deeper taupe. It will tie in with your yellow accessories and bridge the gap between the purple and yellow. And it will warm up the room. It will also look good with the lime green mentioned above....particularly if the lime leans toward the yellow side rather than the blue side. :)

I like your rug too! But, the white squares in it doesn't make sense with everything else. Soooo, how about throwing a white fur square pillow on the sofa so the pillow and rug can talk to each other?

I think you could do a natural fiber rug, such as a sisal or sisal look. It would add texture which is needed i think and help to tie in with the lovely wood table.( you might even layer it with a hide for more funky look and texture) Also I think there is one yellow pillow too many on sofa. Too overdo a good thing:) Also, don't know if it was mentioned, but the cocktail table is too large. Might try a round one for that type of space. And the artwork needs to be a large, horizontal piece, i think. Good luck!

I think also that the rug size is cutting the room in half. If you had a larger rug it would pull the room together. You might then move the yellow chair out of the corner on to the rug. The traffic could flow behind the chair, and you could brighten up the corner by adding a spotlight directed toward the wall on some type of artwork or a favorite thing.
do you have room to scoot the sofa down and add a small accent chair to that grouping? that yellow chair as you mentioned too big and it just sits alone by itself, too isolated to leave a chair there , as least in photo it appears. I would create something of interest there, shelving, desk, books, etc perhaps?

I Absolutely agree that you should change the rug to something more subtle in a warm taupe colour ...here are a few that would look great. It will help define the area and give a nice contrast off the dark floor while also complimenting the purple and tying it in to the yellow.
The art above the sofa needs more of a presence so if you can not afford one large piece, try pairing it with other pieces to accentuate the length of the wall and make the room feel larger. Also add a table lamp on one side and a floor lamp on the other.
I also agree about the placement of the chair in the corner. Its awkward and lonely...but just wait until you replace it with something more contemporary and then you can play with the arrangement.

I like that you went with some bold colours but I really don't think lime green is a good idea. There are enough colours in the room (purple, yellow, white, black and different shades of grey in the rug) without adding another primary colour. The purple and yellow already make a statement so I suggest pulling out the white to give the room an urban chic design. A white leather Barcelona chair is timeless and stylish.

A round coffee table would suit the space better. It would also create a better flow. Here are some options that would work. I also live in Montréal so I chose some local stores (IKEA, CB2 and Structube). These would showcase the rug more and the chrome legs would reflect all the colours.

Jumping in without reading all the comments, which is always dangerous! Hope I am not repeating someone.

I would replace the busy rug with a simple white shag. And add a much larger piece of art over the sofa. Think those two things will make a big impact.

I agree about removing the chair (and the lamp) in the corner but here are some other suggestions for furniture placement. I read you plan on buying bigger artwork for over the couch so I suggest hanging the painting you have on this wall (remove smaller items). The two cabinets look nice but clear the tops and hang just one picture over each. About the same width as the cabinets. You could choose two of your favourite vacation pictures. Having an orchid on each would also be nice and simple.

The branch floor lamp is very nice but it's hidden in the corner. I would move it to the right side of the couch so it's a feature when walking in. Move the carved stand (on above picture) to the left side of the couch because it's too much like the cabinets. The small tables on either side of the couch don't add anything to the design of the room (but I can't see the one on the right side).

Your space has alot of potential and you're off to a great start but it's difficult trying to explain everything in writing plus dimensions on pictures aren't very accurate. Like I mentioned above, I also live in Montreal so it would be my pleasure to assist in your design dilemma in person if you would like. Have fun shopping for new items! :)

With your color scheme I like Chartreuse for an additional pop of color(in moderation....pillows etc.). Works great with purples.

Such a nice space, and you have some wonderful pieces.

I'm most agreeable with LB Interiors and her comments. I think you have enough bright colors already and bringing in another strong one such as lime would be overpowering. The drapery material she suggested is also very nice. Yes there are multiple colors but they're subdued and in small enough pattern that it will actually help pull all your other things together. Just keep the walls light and somewhere in your color family. A very light blue-gray or lavendar-gray would work. You'd probably want to stay away from brown-grays. Use your yellow chair, it's fine. You can always replace it later. But slide it over to join the sofa group. It's lonely and wants to talk to someone. And so will someone sitting in the chair, which they can't do easily now. If you don't care for the secondary warm purple rug, take it out. Use it somewhere else not so close to your more blue main rug.

The tall piece in the corner is beautiful. Is there enough room in front of it, to work in some wooden side chairs with the little table in the middle? You can find those chairs easily in thrift stores and it's trendy right now to paint and recover them. It's also fun to experiment with the placement of your main rug. What about putting it on an angle or angling your sofa/seating group more towards the window corner?

Just have fun and be sure to update everyone as you go along.

I do agree with needing another colour to balance it all, but a bright lime is too overpowering. You already have a 2 bright colours. You need something subtle to tie it all together. I would go for a green tone only in the wall paint. So not even noticably green even. Look for a neutral in the greenish tones. I think that will tone it down and tie it all together. Good luck!

    Where is this couch from?

Don't care for the purple rug in the corner and would bring the chair and lamp into the couch area. Otherwise love the purple and yellow. I'm actually thinking of that myself. I wouldn't add another color unless it's neutral.
