How do you use your Attic?

Do you have an attic? I don't see many, but I've always wanted one big enough to use as a "secret" getaway. ;)

If you have an attic, share your photos and comment below telling us what you have up there. Did you turn it into a gym? Another bedroom? Or is it just another storage area?

Jpp221 - thank you! Don't worry, his addiction is incurable and there's no chance he'll stop any time soon. And that's the second library in the house, his office walls are covered in books(shelves) as well.

About the gap - as we don't have children, we decided not to close off the staircase and leave it open plan - we thought of building some shelves at that end too, or installing a banister - but I don't think there's a need for it. The bathroom up there has a pocket door - we purposely designed it that way so nobody would swing the door open and hit someone outside.

Btw - how are your in-laws?

I have set up the attic as a fun place for kids with board games and a library set up there. They can also access their tree house from here.

sensible access is an obvious issue. luckily we could install an open staircase to make the best use of the attic, by turning into a great bedroom with a bath in the room! having a glass apex adds a unique feature, enhanced and controlled by the shutters.

Our attic was designed as a third floor in 1925. It has standard stairs, two bedrooms and a bathroom. My ten-year-old uses one of the rooms as his bedroom and the other as the Lego room. There is a cool storage area that we refer to as Narnia - because there is a closet in a closet in a closet (the third closet being an old built-in cedar armoir that resembles the one from the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe).

Our attic was totally unfinished when we purchased the house. We separated the area to make retreats for my husband and for myself, in two very very different styles. These two rooms are ALSO in a very different style from the rest of our house. The house proper is Georgian and semi-formal. The attic is casual (husband) and ultra modern (me). We get to see the sky and the top of the pine trees from the windows. It's so quiet it's as if we've left our busy street and gone to our "nearest far-away" place. ;)

We turned our attic into a craft room. With sunroofs, we felt it would not make a good bedroom or guestroom with so much light. I love it as my woman cave ;-)

It sounds like shakerjaebs and I live in the same house! Our "attic" was designed as a third floor bedroom suite in 1929, with a staircase and landing, hallway, bathroom, bedroom, and walk in cedar-lined closet. We use it as a guest suite. Next to it is a door that leads to a long, narrow unfinished storage attic under the eaves. I'm always amazed that our teenage son hasn't claimed the third floor as his private domain (despite our offers), but he's stayed attached to his smaller bedroom downstairs.

I'm not sure if our space qualifies as an attic, since it was a purposely built top floor (would that be a loft?) Anyway, there was an attic there, we got rid of it, as it was meagre and hard to access. We needed vertical space for bookshelves - as you can see below, someone in our house is an obsessive book collector. That custom ladder is still on the 'to do list'; we'll get to it one day...
PS: I posted these photos before, but I can't resist doing it again. You can see where the attic was, the beam with the lights used to hold the former ceiling.

The attic is where I store my in-laws stupid advice. In fact, last year during the holidays I put my actual father-in-law up there just to cut down on transit time for the ideas.

Speaking of my father-in-law...where has she...oh crap, gotta go. Just remembered something I forgot in the attic last year.

Luciana, those bookcases are fantastic. Tell whoever the book collector is to keep collecting. With any luck you'll need to extend the bookcases to the area behind the sofa and alongside the desk, filling the whole wall. Great.

One question: Is it just me (am I reading the photo wrong), but is the stairwell an open hole on the one side...as in, people can just fall in? Or is my perspective off? (It looks like the space is SO finished, not a work-in-progress otherwise.) (But whatever the answer is, know that I LOVE your attic. I wanna move in.)

The largest room in my bungalow is the master bedroom. A huge bedroom that used to be an attic. On either side under the eaves are a walk in closet and unfinished bathroom.

Love the pics! Attics are great space to be claimed much like basements. I grew up with a bedroom that had slanted walls like an attic, perhaps it was at one time. As a child I could fit on the shorter wall but gradually it became my younger sisters space. The look is appealing and definitely works well for bedroom spaces.

We use our attic for relaxation. We also put a third bedroom up there as well love the space!! It is also where I exercise.

Storage only. Access is through daughter's bedroom closet, so any other use would mean some serious reconfiguration. It's been painful enough to make sure teenage girl's room has passable (ie clear, no clothes and junk) so we can get through ...
