badbren - we used old, reclaimed bricks that vary in color, some even had old paint on them, but most are just varying brick shades. We used a really light grout (almost white) and there is a half inch space in between. Most of the bricks are flawed in some way - chips, broken corners, etc, so the light grout residue is more evident.
