I believe it's generally advisable to avoid a bowling-alley effect. In my experience though, you're limited by the direction of the floor-joists if it's nail-down flooring. Would you say your style is more modern, or traditional? I'm pretty sure that diagonal installation is for a more modern style (although I haven't seen it in a while).
