I would put them in an office, hallway or stairwell wall ;)

One big 40x40 art that you love. Over sofa. Don't try and do a gallery meant for a hallway. Shelves to small for large space. Ck Z Galleries they have some interesting art. Hang 6" above top.of sofa. Go lots of color.

the pillows are there temporary. I guess the word "textures" is used so often. I don't quite understand it….

This is such a personal preference issue, artwork is a good choice but the most important thing is you have to like it. When in doubt I find most of my clients like nature - might consider 2 Audubon prints of birds or flowers, they add a classic element without being fussy , everybody seems to like them. and don't buy the cheapest frame ( mid priced better)
since they will make a statement of the quality of the whole space.

By textures I mean maybe a basket, or a glass vase, something metal, etc.;)

Family photos are best on walls where people can walk up to them and look at the photos.

you can put family pictures anywhere in your house. I just wouldn't do the shelves. the wall would swallow them up and make them look finicky. put something up there that'll make you happy. just make sure its proportionate to the couch and wall, whether it be a large art piece or a gallery wall.

Hi- Consider moving the heavier books to the bottom of the bookcase where they won't show. Pick a few pretty ones and stack them, bindings out, with interesting pieces on top.
Your sofa looks long (bigger then 6 feet, I'm sure), so you will need more than one piece of art. Your ceilings aren't high enough for 1 giant piece. So consider companion pieces as suggested above.
Where are the windows in your room? If they're across from your sofa, a mirror will reflect the light around the room. Hang art work with it. You have the right idea. Go with your gut.

yes, the sofa is 9' long. There is a huge window next to the bookcase on the other side of the fire place. a mirror sounds good.

I'm a huge fan of hanging the rugs from Home Depot..They always have a few on sale that should never be put on a floor..Like the strings of silver pee's....Lots of cool colors and texture..Not like the typical pattern ones

I see some cool sconces at either side of wall and 2 -3 same size art pieces in the middle.

My living-room has a big blank wall just like yours:). I haven't figured out what to do with it either. Let me know what you come up with!!:) post pics when you're done...I'm interested to see what you've done!!

I would hang a rug on rods on the wall behind the sofa...your lamps look oriental influenced and you have some dark red cushions....I would opt for an oriental dark red background rug to hang which will add warmth, texture and an exotic feel to the room
