Do Plumbers charge to much for their services?

For years homeowners have complained that plumbers charge too much.

It’s not like plumbing is all that hard to learn. Or is it???

There are many good reasons plumbers charge the rates they do.

What do you think?

1. Plumbing is an essential service.

2. Plumbing can get complicated and dirty.

3. Plumbing needs to be done right…the first time.

No they don't. Nor do most qualified trades people. Notice I say qualified. There are many out there who don't do quality work but still charge the big bucks. That's what creates the image that trades people charge too much.

A good plumber is a gold mine! Same for all trades people!! My plumber and electrician charge somewhere around $23 an hour, plus materials and worth every penny!!!

Come to Switzerland where I am lucky to get tradespeople at less than $80 an hour!!! Puts it all in perspective....

The more difficult the job is for a plumber to tackle, the more time it
will take. Most plumbers charge a flat-rate service call plus an hourly
rate for their labor. The plumber may be able to break down their rate
of labor into quarter-hours. In addition to the service call and labor
fee, homeowners will also need to pay for the cost of any necessary
supplies to complete a plumbing repair or installation.

Some plumbers can take advantage of you in emergency situations - like frozen pipes - or backed up sewer lines - but in general they're honest and like doctors - get paid for the knowledge. They should be given the same respect and realize what they go through to be a licensed plumber - apprenticeship - classes and comprehensive testing. (Can you guess I'm the granddaughter of a plumber?)

My grandfather had a great reaction to a friend and neighbor who was a doctor. When my mother was ill and he asked if he could come take a look at her - the doctor said he didn't do house calls, bring her to his office in the morning. Several months later when the doctor had a broken pipe - he called for help from my grandfather - to which he replied "I don't do house calls" which was actually true - he was the owner of a plumbing company with only commercial jobs.
