When I am looking at pix #3, what is behind me?

I ask because the two rugs you have chosen are not big enough for the space. I also do not care for the sofa up against your pretty windows. Could you flip the sofa to the other side of the fireplace and then put two chairs in front of the windows, facing the sofa?

Iamjudy- I agree re couch placement, but we don't have much choice- I attached a picture showing view opposite the couch. We tried putting it facing the windows, but it eats the space and blocks the flow.

What would happen if you pulled the sofa closer to the fireplace…try it without the table and lamp.

Do you have two posts going? I suggest you remove one, as your advisors will get confused or give conflicting advice.

Just so I understand, you suggest keeping the couch in the same place, but shifting it forward and ditching the end table and lamp? Also, as far as size if the rug is concerned, I agree that they are too small. The leaf rug is a 5x8 rug - do you think a 6x9 or an 8x10 rug would be better?

Ava, that is what I mean…at least for now. I would like to know if the sofa could be pulled away from the windows and get close to the wall next to the fireplace. If you can get the sofa placed, then choosing the rug size will be easier.

Put the couch directly in front of the fireplace and create space behind it. You have a tight space, but that will give you a cozy focus and your chair can probably go on the window side.

You are right, the leaf patterns are competing because they are too similar in size. You are going to need a large rug which extends from just in front of the fireplace to behind the sofa. I am guessing 8x10. Measure from front of fireplace to opposite wall.

What are your favorite colors? There are zillions of rugs. Unfortunately for me, I always like the expensive ones.

You have a lot of options given that your furniture is neutral and dark. I would go for a vibrant rug with a lot of pattern.

The new arrangement works better, but do try what I am suggesting before you make your decision.

You know the rug could work if you changed the drapes and that might be easier and cheaper.

Get rid of all those small tables. You are creating clutter. Depending on where the couch ends up, get one big ottoman/coffee table or sofa table and one other table for next to your chair. Dump the rest of the clutter and you will have a relaxing room. I like it.

If you are going to keep the couch in present position, pull it another six inches forward.

Couple of things I would try. First, for maximum natural light, extend the rod so that curtains just cover the trim (to expose all the window possible).

And see if this works. Put sofa facing fireplace, pulled in close with front feet on the rug. Or try it on the opposite side of the rug, looking out the window. That will also let more light into the room, as the sofa won't block any.

One more (as I have my own furniture in my difficult living room): Try the sofa at an angle where the chair is now. Angle rug also. That way look at fireplace and the view out the window.

Never know about furniture placement until you try!

Ava, I do, too. If you put the table and lamp next to it now, does the sofa stick out too far?

Try the chair opposite the sofa at the other corner of the mantel with that table and lamp there. So now you have matching tables and lamps on either side of the fireplace.

How does that look?

Thanks to all for the ideas! This is facing the fireplace. Was worried it would block the flow to the dining room- the space behind the couch is limited, as pictured, but still walkable

I liked the sofa arrangement when it was in front of the windows, but pulled forward, closer to the fireplace. Try iamjudy's advice about moving the chair opposite the sofa, but close to the fireplace. Lovely room & furniture, by the way.
