I wouldn't do it. Are the chairs black in front of the fireplace? If you want some color, I would paint the arched inset of the fireplace but not the whole fireplace. And I would start with a nice neutral warm gray. Something that would blend well with the floors. And if you like that, then maybe branch out to the rest of the fireplace. I would stop at the fireplace however and leave the longer piece above white. Black is such an absorbing color. It doesn't reflect any light. But you're getting advice from someone who likes to bring light into a room rather than absorb it. You could also use a high gloss paint instead of satin for a nice reflection of light and to add some contrast.
